    Pros

Awesome team and great company to work for!

    Cons

None to my experience, but it's a tough ability to stand out considering it's such a large company.

I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time

    Pros

Great maternity benefits! Decent pay for this department, compared to other companies. Bonus incentive which is nice.

    Cons

Not parent friendly. Will not allow employees to work from home, unless they are managers or directors. Too many politics and promotions have little to do with skill and more to do with personality. Dead end job with no room for growth. Too many women, which leads to a lot of gossip. Treated like children by upper management. Disposable position. Doesn't matter how good you are at the job, they will replace you without an issue. Morale sucks!!

    Advice to Management

Get with the program. Working from home is not a privilege. Every department at discovery allows it, but commercial operations. Stop complaining about people using their days....if working from home were an option, less sick days would be used.

I have been working at Discovery Communications as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Big name, good benefits (if you're a full-time employee), employee events, lots of free things, can move around in company, offices all over the US and the world

    Cons

SUPER corporate/bureaucratic, job can feel very menial/pointless because oftentimes you're just doing things for higher ups without really knowing why, company is kind of old and not exciting, just an office job--doesn't feel like it's in the entertainment industry

    Advice to Management

    Explain projects better

I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Hiring my own teams and able to make decisions quickly without a lot of input from higher ups - however this extremely RARE in the company as a whole.

    Cons

Salaries are not competitive, leadership like to clean house too often and lets all the institutional knowledge walk out the door. This allows the same mistakes/bad programming to be made over and over again. Bring back the OG and ratings will improve - especially at DSC and APL. A lot of lip service is given to risk-taking but then decision makers don't want to lose their jobs so stretching to try new things is minimal and thus brings down the whole company.

    Advice to Management

Give new ideas a fighting chance - put money and leadership behind them. Move into the digital space for real - real content - put real money behind it - people have the ideas - TURN THEM LOOSE! The regimes of yesteryear were not afraid to take big swings and even when striking out didn't run from next great project - they kept swinging. Also - LA and NYC are not the end all be all - Discovery programming was doing better ratings when centralized in Silver Spring. There are as many creatively talented people here as there are in bigger towns.

I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A true purpose-driven company, high-energy, talented and productive staff, wonderful senior leadership, great culture, benefits, and facilities, lots of autonomy and trust to get work done without micro-management or clock-watching, super flexible schedules.

    Cons

Below-average pay (varies by position), small budgets, company growth and hiring oftentimes stalled by external factors, tough market to crack, under-staffed at times

    Advice to Management

Consider investing less in sales and more in other areas, i.e. customer experience, support, marketing
