I worked at Discovery Communications (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Working with some of the best in the business, a you learn a lot. And they have a lot resources which help you to do your job. They also invest in growing their employees.

    Cons

There was a time when Discovery was a sleepy company where people spent most of their careers. But with the constant layoffs, it has caused a culture of fear.

I worked at Discovery Communications full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

flexible work hours, smart people, lots of good benefits, impact day

    Cons

disconnect with leadership. constant restructuring "fear for your job layoffs". all of upper management is scared to say no to leadership. dead weight always kept their jobs while excellent employees who made more money got laid off. all about the bottom line.

    Advice to Management

It's understood that when you are a publicly traded company, you have to make your shareholders happy, but you also have to take care of your employees. you also say you are true to the Discovery Brand, but the programming has been awful since Zaslav got there. you work your employees to death and then don't promote them due to limited finances.

    Pros

I've worked at Discovery for almost 4 years and can say its been one of the most challenging but rewarding jobs I've ever had. The employees and general atmosphere in the Miami location were very welcoming. Management made great efforts to build up and help their subordinates succeed.

    Cons

None to speak of as of yet.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing.

I worked at Discovery Communications full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Benefits, "Resume", Plenty of resources to grow, The Cove (onsite cafe)

    Cons

Vague expectations, Senior Management waxes eloquence often, Lack of empowerment

    Advice to Management

Empower your younger/newer employees to take ownership of defining the culture. Very corporate, very "too big to fail." Brand awareness campaigns would certainly help.
