I have been working at Disney English full-time

        Pros

I've met some lovely people here.

        Cons

Kids and parent are seen as cash cows- it's all about renewal rates; you're just a "product" to further the Disney Invasion into the world's largest market. If you're passionate about teaching, run far, far away. Proceed only if you like living in hyperreality and you believe that Disneyland is the happiest place on Earth You only get holidays on national holidays- days which you rather not travel because of the...

"High pressure to achieve unrealistic goals"

        StarStarStarStarStar
          Former Employee - Foreign Trainer

I worked at Disney English for more than 2 years

          Pros

Disney content is great. Disney cast member. Ability to become Disney Trainer

          Cons

Question/Answer template for teaching isn't realistic and reduces students ability to actually have a normal conversation. People in upper management positions promote close friends instead of best people for the job.

          Advice to Management

Promote best people for job advertised, not friends or people who you think are going to stay in China longer. Follow your own philosophy and create achievable, realistic goals. Almost impossible for foreign trainers with 10 classes to consistently achieve the high pressure goals you set. Upper management staff should observe a variety of classes, not just the same class. Unfair if you are observed for the same difficult...

          "Frustrating"

          StarStarStarStarStar
            Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

I have been working at Disney English for more than 6 years

            Pros

They provide health insurance and pay on time

            Cons

Work takes up a lot of your time. Working weekends. Many people with teaching degrees at DE are very overqualified and could get better jobs at International Schools.

I have been working at Disney English full-time for more than a year

            Pros

-Paid hotel and airfare -Paid on time every month -Free Disney park tickets -Great friendships with other foreign staff -Good relationships with students -Good health and dental benefits - Pretty good vacation time

            Cons

-The pay is exploitative. You will earn around 12,500 CNY per month and maybe that will sound like a lot but if you have a Bachelors Degree (in any discipline) you can earn far more from companies that will also pay for your TEFL training -Horribly long and exhausting weekends (12 hours on Saturday, 8.5 hours on Sunday) -A lot of the other reviewers say that this company is about money, money, money and this is true....

            Advice to Management

If a Foreign Trainer is having a bad experience with Disney English and they want to leave Disney but continue working and living in China, don't make it so difficult to obtain a new job by cancelling their visas immediately. If an FT finishes their contract, don't wait until the last day to give them their Release Letter. You know that their new company needs more time to process the paperwork for their new work visa,...

-Students are a joy -Paid on time -Disney perks -Great health insurance -A lot of positive, fun coworkers -There is a positive atmosphere where helping other staff is encouraged

            Cons

-Disney English focuses so much on sales over delivering a quality education, that it hinders sales. Classes change rapidly as there is such a low renewal rate. Children are placed in classes with little or no regard to their English level. When as a teacher you are finally able to find a balance a class will get cancelled. This problem was the most extreme when I observed a center manager send teachers and students into...

I worked at Disney English full-time for more than a year

            Pros

            - Disney parks perks (this is really only helpful if living in Shanghai) - Help with the visa process - Disney pays for all expenses to get here except your actual visa (but this is reimbursed at a later date and you have to do a lot of paperwork) - The health insurance is some of the best in China and you only pay 10% copay - TEFL training and expenses paid for by Disney

            Cons

            - The hours will kill you (especially the weekends) - You will miss having a normal life - There are too many classes and responsibilities (i.e - you barely get time to pee during shifts) - If you get crappy management your entire experience with Disney English is down the tubes - If you have a poor experience with your learning partner (whom you don't get to choose nor are they placed with you based on compatibility)...

            Advice to Management

            - Hire individuals who are qualified for the job; not based on friendships - Value the foreign trainers for moving across the world for this company; they are after all the product you are selling - Pay local staff more. They are definitely overworked and underappreciated and payed much lower than what they deserve

I worked at Disney English full-time for more than 4 years

            Pros

Disney English is worth trying for one reason: The people you will meet. I will never forget the people I have met (good and bad) and the new friends that I have made while being in China. Coming to China can be a daunting experience for some people but meeting new lifetime friendships makes the journey worth it. Despite the majority of negative reviews of DE here on Glassdoor, DE does have some positives. DE is a...

            Cons

DE at times is a discombobulated mess. For the majority of my time here DE has experienced chronic FT shortages which have led to many in my region to be overworked because people are doing so much extra coverage which in turn leads to bitterness and lower morale. Morale in my region is quite poor among the FTs and it can be difficult some days to go into a job everyone talks about hating or quitting. The salary...

            Advice to Management

Stop raising the price every year, and then expect FTs to meet impossible academic standards in class to justify your "premium product" -treat and pay your local staff better. There is a reason turnover is so high and a lot of them leave to go to other competitors like EF -Take input from FTs for future roll-outs as they are the ones in the classroom everyday. Not some people sitting behind desks in Shanghai coming...
