good job if you want to be "retired in place"

      Jan 5, 2022 - Senior Software Engineer

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      * Great perks with free park passes and discounts on merch and hotels * Get to work with some of the world's best IP * Provided nice office equipment

      Cons

Biggest con was a very slow and old-school engineering culture. The terms "Retired in Place" and "Not Invented Here" syndrome apply. People are afraid to modernize tooling or processes because everything is so easy to break. High level engineers are happy to waste days on scut work (the kind of stuff that is normally automated elsewhere). The mouse has pretty deep pockets so no skin off their back but not a good atmosphere to build a career in (unless you want to be a career clock puncher watching technology pass you by). Engineers didn't seem to be interested in fixing bugs or doing root cause analysis, just playing hot potato with them to keep work off their plate (and so things get dropped and don't get fixed). It was embarrassing working on software that was so unforgivably buggy and see how little the other engineers there cared about the impact on the end-user.

      I've been Lucky

Sep 11, 2021 - Lead Software Engineer in New Haven, CT

      Pros

I've been lucky and rising up the ranks with promotions about once a year. Two of those promotions were because people left. The other was because I fought for an open headcount they were currently hiring for on my team. The current releveling increased my bonus pools at my level (P4) and put my total comp in a competitive place with what I'm seeing in the wider market. If you love visiting Disney Parks, the benefits of doing so as an employee are awesome.

      Cons

A lot of my colleagues have not been as lucky on the promotion front even though they are just as deserving. Ton of late breaking requirements for a recent major launch recently had a lot of people working around the clock. My new Hulu team mates members are getting benefits cut significantly, and there is open vitrol about it. Management/HR attempt at responding is to blow it off. Morale is incredibly low right now and based on all hands meeting people are close to a revolt. The higher you get up the management chain, the more disconnected they seem from our day to day reality they created for us.

      No Growth

      Pros

People are very nice. Every year you opt in to get a choice of either a "main pass" to get you in disney world or the Disney Bundle (Disney+, Hulu+, Espn+).

      Cons

Benefits are ok, not as great for such a big company. My old job had better healthcare with lower deductible, chose CIGNA atm. Vision is VSP. Dental is Delta. No growth opportunity. They say a "lattice" move is just as good as an upward movement and something to strive for too, you know that there were a lot of people that didn't get promotions they deserve. Leadership is beyond poor. One is a dictator and the other is a yes man. It's 100% production design work, not at all creative. You get key art and resize in 100 different ways for each campaign. I wouldn't recommend working in this department if you want to do fun creative.

      Pros

Incredibly supportive people on team. Work is collaborative and innovative. There are lots of opportunities to learn / for development if you continue to say yes to projects that come your way.

      Cons

Pace is fast, work life balance can occasionally be out of sorts.

      Pros

Okay place to work. You will get exposed to large distributed systems

      Cons

I do not have any cons. I would say like any companies know what you want to work on. Make sure you work on marketable skillset and always ask why should we do this vs that. Try to understand your org OKRs and see if your team work aligns to it.

      Pros

Only pro is that you got disney on your resume.

      Cons

Not much mentoring at all and no room for growth. Despite having really good reviews in the two years I was there, no promotion. First time I've heard of a company that promotes based on need rather than performance. Higher ups don't seem to know what they are doing. The way things are done are consistently changing.

      Pros

Exciting to work with some of the best content in the world

      Cons

      - VERY top down. Not your typical product role. Expect to be focused on executing on leadership’s vision vs. solving real user problems - Waterfall process. Each team works in a silo and projects are very milestone driven vs. iterative - Unclear lines of ownership. An unnecessarily tall org chart compounded by a matrix of roles and responsibilities with tons of overlap without any clear guidance from leadership - Process for the sake of process. When something isn’t efficient, there is a tendency to add more process rather than reevaluating the existing process
