      Pros

      - Exciting work on the cutting edge of digital media - It's a growing business with plenty of opportunities for advancement - Great benefits

      Cons

      - Sometimes there can be a lack of effective communication between product, design, engineering, etc - Lack of transparency from upper management, although this is getting better - While benefits are good, salary is a bit below average

      Startup Expectations with Bureaucratic Processes

      May 24, 2021 - Data Analytics

      Pros

People are nice, you rarely meet aggressive individuals. Job security, it's extremely difficult for you to be laid off as a result of your performance.

      Cons

I worked at Disney Streaming Services (DSS) expecting the best combination of both startup and corporate. Challenging work, great career potential, along with career stability. DSS does have the best of both worlds ... for Disney. Senior management expects people to move at breakneck speed while ignoring issues such as red tapes, lack of transparency, and politics to progress. Most people stayed during the shutdown due to lack of job opportunities, but as the economy opens up, individuals across all levels and departments are leaving on a weekly basis. In terms of data, there is also a difference in expectation between stakeholders and the data org. Stakeholders and senior execs see data analytics primarily as a reporting team / data support center, whereas analytic leaders want equal partnership and influence decision making. This gap in expectations has led to a lot of unhappiness (and sometimes delusion). Many great employees that were hired from FB, Netflix etc, have left, leaving behind those from consulting / non-tech backgrounds.

      Leadership and culture needs work

      Pros

The Walt Disney Company is a large successful global media company, which is beneficial as a parent company. Employees have the ability to seek opportunities across the entire company. Competitive benefits package. Some great people across various teams.

      Cons

Despite some talented employees, unfortunately the culture is toxic and many overworked miserable employees openly complain. Leadership has a lot of room to improve. There is a lack of transparency, a lack of strategic vision, and decisions are often reactionary and impulsive. The leadership teams at The Walt Disney Company and Disney Streaming Services do not communicate and have opposing views and goals. This trickles down, causes confusion, and impedes great work from the teams.
