I have been working at Dolby full-time

    Pros

The benefits are fantastic - 9/80 work schedule, 401K, parental leave, ESPP. The technology is truly special, and there are some real technical wizards at the company. The people are also a big asset - they care about the technology and there's a family vibe.

    Cons

The company is struggling to reinvent itself in the new technology age, and management is still trying to extract more dollars from the same business model.

It also doesn't do enough to turn over underperforming staff.

    Advice to Management

Take some advice from Netflix - "we're a team, not a family". There are "enough" people at Dolby, just not the "right" people in many cases (especially on the product and business side). A good round of restructuring/rehiring would be bring new thought and operational leadership to the company.

    Pros

I enjoyed my time working there, a culture for a slightly older generation

    Cons

The culture is a bit stale and stiff. If you play things safe great place to work at

    Pros

Dolby is old, however it is a tech company, and has been actively adapting to emulate the tech work culture. The products are incredibly inovative and cool, and this makes the work you do in your job more exciting. Dolby definitely has the google quality of once you work there, you really believe in the products. Dolby is truly leading the way in entertainment experience technology, and as an employee, you are always exposed to incredibly cool product and entertainment experience demos.

    Cons

While Dolby is an older company, they are tying to adapt to the contemporary tech culture. As a result, there remain some conservative old school corporate norms embedded in the company, beneath the modern tech surface. There seems to be a little bit of a ladder climbing attitude amongst some employees, for the most part though everyone is incredibly laid back friendly, and supportive.

    Advice to Management

In my experience, Dolby's meeting heavy corporate culture bogged down the efficiency of the workflow. It is very easy to simply use google docs, or exchange ideas via email. Instead of serving as a place where the brainstorm starts, meetings should be where decisions and strategies are finalized; not incubated and nurtured constantly along the way.

I worked at Dolby as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Fun perks on various floors... and the 1275 office is getting a brand new Dolby Cinema soon!
The HR team does an amazing job with the intern program. There's no shortage of activities to get to know each other, interesting labs, and executives. It was a lot of fun, and I felt that it was an important part of the experience.
My colleagues all shared a passion for music and for engineering, and people love working there for that balance.

    Cons

In general, engineering takes their time -- pace can be slow.
Disconnects between groups can be off-putting, especially for an intern's short experience.
