      Great place to work

Feb 24, 2020 - Senior Staff Design Engineer in London, England

      Pros

Really nice people to work with. Managers and team leads give good feedback. Every other Friday is off! Interesting projects throughout the company.

      Cons

Upper management is a little too focused on keeping operational costs shaved to the bare minimum. This not necessarily a bad thing, but I think they push this concept a bit over the edge in the wrong direction.

Sad Place for a female leader

Mar 30, 2018 - Lead Engineer in London, England

      Business Outlook

      Pros

9/80 which is great when you have kids.

      Cons

Extremely slow decision making process. Dolby still depends on old school methodologies and software development process. Upper management is obsessed old school technology and have no idea what's happening in the industry. The research is primarily composed of people who have been here for 20+ years and have no idea what's going on in the industry.

      Change can be unnecessarily uncomfortable.

      Pros

Great teams at and below middle management. Innovative and open creative minds on every floor. Approachable management. Anonymous employee feedback is encouraged. Every other Friday off is a great idea.

      Cons

Ageism is becoming rampant. Too many good, loyal employees are being noticeably kept in current positions or displaced. Upper management is becoming obsessed with change for change's sake. No obvious, cohesive planning is being openly relayed to the worker bees. Every other Friday off only works if it is adhered to by all, especially management. Way too many meetings and meeting follow-ups. Too much reliance on email and not enough personal conversation leads to time spent on misinterpretation.

Large company with massive organizational and technical debt.

Apr 25, 2017 - Software Engineer in San Francisco, CA

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Relaxed work culture. Many different projects are always going on at once, so during your time as an engineer here you'll have the opportunity to work on a lot of different kinds of projects. Competitive pay for the area. Great facilities.

      Cons

Middle and upper management is risk-adverse and lack a clear direction. This leads to many different projects being created to pursue many different platforms that often end up reinventing and repackaging the wheel. Projects are often born as cobbled together frankensteins of other projects, leading to a lot of technical debt. Management oftentimes ignores this, instead pushing for feature creep.

      Fine Company, Could Be Better

Feb 5, 2016 - Staff Engineer in Sunnyvale, CA

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Great work life balance with a very open schedule (great for achievers, bad for most). Good pay and good benefits. Good innovation in some groups.

      Cons

No accountability on results (written defined goals are not even mandatory...) and long projects timelines which led some people to become very complacent as they know there is very little risk of being fired and they can drag things much longer than it should. Too many decision makers with contradictory agendas at upper management level. Quite a bit of politics. Reward is based more on team results than personal results which is wrong for achievers as they being dragged down (back to the lack of personal accountability).

Great minds but very poor execution.

      Pros

Very nice and really hard working people to work with.9/80 is awesome. Some amazing, mindblowing vision and audio technology developed here. Great potential for new products for Dolby Vision /Dolby Atmos if executed properly. Its is highly possible that every Display Device sold in 5 yrs from now could be capable of Dolby Vision.Lot depends on execution.

      Cons

Management completely lacks innovation in bringing new ideas to market. Time to market is very very very slow. Upper management lack foresight and keeps adding/changing new product requirement way too often. Stock price for the last 5 yrs goes only one way and its not north. Poor stock compensation.

      Pros

Very cool working environment, technology and people. Overall layback 9/80 schedule providing excellent work life balance.

      Cons

This company has very good talent dedicating decades of their life working there. But upper management lacks focus and direction.

      Pros

9/80 Work schedule, San Francisco Location, good salary and benefits, interesting work.

      Cons

Excessive feudalism amongst upper management, systematic dismantling the "old guard" and corporate culture that made Dolby successful, WAY TO MANY V.P.s/ Decision Makers. Excessive Political Favoritism, Attempts to reinvent the company without understanding the long-term implications.

Wonderful engineers/co-workers, but upper management is throwing darts w/ minimal strategy.

      Pros

      * The engineers that work there are wonderful, smart, talented, passionate, and driven. * Get every other Friday off. * Better paying than most companies (but at what cost?) * Very encouraging of a healthy working environment (debatably).

      Cons

      * The engineers are under-appreciated/not well known or well utilized by upper management. * There are 2-5 managers for every engineer, rather than the other way around. * Upper management continues to pinch pennies by stretching engineering resources as thinly as possible.
