I worked at Dollar General full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people! Seriously some of the best people I have worked with!

    Cons

Favoritism, very close minded, unbalanced work load, disorganized! There are a lot of managers that have no business being managers. They don't know the business and lack people skills especially with certain groups of people. Some departments have very little work load, yet have more people than needed, while other department are drowning. Management has no clue where the company is going and things constantly change.

    Advice to Management

Think before you act and treat people the same!

    Pros

Dollar General has an excellent commitment to its mission, Serving Others. They hire genuine leaders to inspire and develop talent. DG also has a dedication to promoting within. Some of our very own executives started in a store. DG gives its employees the opportunity to reach their dreams with a little hard work and dedication. The future of the company is clearly shared with employees.

    Cons

The fast-paced environment that DG operates in can be a bit overwhelming at times.

    Pros

Pays well at DM level and above. Company benefits align with competitor and great 401k package. Growth opportunities available at all levels.

    Cons

No work life balance. "Serving Others" mission statement only applies to corporate associates. Lost sight of customers and field employees.

    Advice to Management

    Time to change leadership.

I have been working at Dollar General full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Easy Commute, less traffic then driving to Nashville
    Great Co-Workers
    Daycare is awesome
    Holidays off are nice
    Flexibility with appointments

    Cons

    Work load is not realistic.
Positions are not back filled when someone leaves. High rate of turnover.
    Pay is below normal standards
Nothing can prepare for the volume of work you are expected to do

    Advice to Management

You really need to evaluate the culture and why so many people are leaving and going to Bridgestone. Upper management has gotten greedy.

"Old school, traditional retailer with culture that reflects it"

I have been working at Dollar General full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to transition between departments are fairly easily to obtain, but only below manager level.
    Covered parking.
On-site cafeteria with decent food and excellent staff, though old and outdated dining area.
Probably a great place to work if you want to sit in a low level job and work a flat schedule your whole career without having to learn new skills.
On-site gym that is very cheap.
On-site daycare for people with kids who care about that, though I'm told it is expensive.

    Cons

    Office located in Goodlettsville.
Presence in the community is not near as strong as the company flaunts.
Offices are outdated with old furniture and dirty carpet, have seen little to no renovation in what is now a 17 year old building.
Horribly strong traditional office culture. Cubicles, closed off meeting spaces, unnecessarily long meetings and a staff unwilling to deter from legacy behavior.
Lack of technology. Technologically advanced at DG SSC means you can use MS Excel skillfully, and most employees cannot.
Simply not an innovative company, lead by grind-it-out style leadership.
Favoritism toward employees with children. Little issue with someone constantly being out of office because of kid issues, but if you have no children leadership doesn't understand what you might possibly have to do except work.
Big corporate. Slow to achieve anything.
Current CEO has no presence at the office and has driven the degradation in company's culture.

    Advice to Management

Ease up on the traditional culture and begin investing in technology and clean workspaces, or you will struggle to recruit and retain quality emerging talent. The daily frustrations of working through outdated systems in a dilapidated building do not generate enthusiasm to log 60 hour work weeks.
