I have been working at Dollar General full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The stores are usually pretty flexible. Makes it easy to work around doctors appointments and such or a child in school.

    Cons

Everything else. Very stressful. Very high expectations, but they don't give you what you need to meet those expectations. They allow customers to treat you like garbage and then make you call them to apologize so they will continue to shop there. You are required to work 6 days a week as a SM which leaves little room for a personal life. If there is really bad weather and travel bans, you're still required to risk your life and go in for those maybe 10 customers who live next door to shop. Very very greedy. They don't care about you.

    Advice to Management

You need to put money in to make money. Update all your old, outdated stores. Give hours so we can have double coverage most of the day, that will satisfy customers which will promote repeat customers and larger basket sizes.

I worked at Dollar General part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Easy job, might enjoy people you work with and chatting with vendors

    Cons

No discount, manager will always expect you to be able to cover, expect lectures about how your pay is adequate and stealing time is the same as stealing money. No respect, the company isnt good to work for.

    Advice to Management

Stop apreading shrink blame to everyone, and dont give out adequate wage bs, its barely above minimum.

I worked at Dollar General full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The best part of the job was working with the friendly "regulars" customers.

    Cons

The cashiers and even key holders were on a rotating-door status. No one ever stayed very long. This meant that I often had to handle conflicts, de-escalate my store manager, carry a high workload, and train new employees.

    Advice to Management

An overwhelmed store manager who is doing poorly will snowball and create problems among every area of the store, team, and productivity.

    Pros

Like working with people. Have a great manager

    Cons

Low pay, have to do stock, clean, and other's jobs they didn't do. Manager isnt allowed to work us enough to get the jobs done required of us. We work alone at times. No way to call for help if something happens unless the phone is by you. Need more security in case of robbery. Button under counter or something . They don't worry about safety when leaving One person in the store alone. For 8 dollars an hour. DG doesn't care about the employees working their butt off, no reconition or raises for hard work. They just expect more and more

    Advice to Management

Appreciate the little people that work their but off for you. We work for nothing and no praises just always finding something else to add to us. Try our job for a couple days and our pay.

I worked at Dollar General full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

There is no pros to working for this excuse for a company.

    Cons

    -Lied to about hours
    - Disrespected and verbally harassed during my shift from employee even on days when she was off
    - employee would encourage an unsafe work environment by leaving cigarettes in the electrical housing on the outside of the building
    - key employee verbally harassed and abused a fellow co worker telling her to walk in a snowstorm when she has a medically documented injured back.
    - This is in the Colchester, CT store
-Was never told I couldn't work two jobs when I was hired
    -Very negative workplace

    Advice to Management

Advice to CEO directly and all upper level executive Management, treat your employees with respect. Don't openly break laws relating to OSHA and HIPPA. Focus on your employees not profit. Hire competent store management that has experience dealing not only with people but with different employees. Your employees should be allowed to work an extra job if necessary to provide for our families as we don't make millions of dollars a year. You should actually read this and take appropriate action to make your company a pleasant place to work
