I worked at Dollar Thrifty Automotive full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I spent 20 years at Dollar Thrifty and was there when things were really rocky, but with the right management teams in please to company rose from the brink of death to a very strong cash flow and A plus credit ratings. Unfortunately they were purchased by Hertz and 2012 which has lead to it's demise. Thousands of jobs were lost or outsourced as a result and after Hertz decided to go a different direction with the company many vendor contracts were not renewed with resulted in layoffs.

    Cons

Company was purchased by Hertz who lived up to none of the promises it made. Dollar Thrifty was a profitable company and rather than adhere to the standards that made Dollar Thrifty profitable and maintain the management and employees that made them success, Hertz moved at warp speed to get rid of all of them and it's been a downhill spiral since then.

    Advice to Management

Trust and invest in the people that turned the company around and made it a success. Many rode off into the sunset with golden parachutes.

    Pros

Great place to work before the merger with Hertz in November, 2012. Great location, fun people and family-like atmosphere.

    Cons

The merger with Hertz & layoff of hundreds of Tulsa workers. Hertz customer service leaves something to be desired.

    Advice to Management

Hertz needs to put people in charge that know something about the business of car rental. Since the merger, the entire executive team has turned over (which hopefully is a good thing).

I worked at Dollar Thrifty Automotive full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

IT management was solid with a good strategic plan

    Cons

Terrible outsourcing policies. They laid off their whole internal IT staff and vended the work out. When the plan didn't work they trickled the work back in.

    Advice to Management

    Marketing strategies are unrealistic.

I worked at Dollar Thrifty Automotive full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Work-life balance is good. Managers understand and don't give flack when you need the time off, even on short notice. Benefits package is about average for the area.

    Cons

Sometimes there are time constraints, but they can be planned around.

I worked at Dollar Thrifty Automotive full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Schedule flexibility in some departments was awesome. Laid back atmosphere and business attire. Good community responsibility. Better pay than majority of the industry in some departments. No pay raises for 3 years until Hertz acquired them--then a whopping 3%.

    Cons

Acquired by Hertz so small company atmosphere is gone. Benefits are too expensive! Stingy with their paid time off. No training or feedback.

    Advice to Management

Provide feedback to your employees about the jobs they perform.

I worked at Dollar Thrifty Automotive full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Before Hertz, there were a lot of great people who worked very hard to take the company from a .60/share losing cause to a viable $85/share winner. Those people were not appreciated and were either terminated -- or in many cases -- they ran when the first opportunity appeared.

    Cons

Dollar Thrifty Board of Directors and former CEO milked the employees for their life's blood and sold out...lined their pockets and walked -- or rather skipped -- away. Hertz DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THE BRANDS. They want Dollar and Thrifty to fail, they only wanted the great monetary/liquid assets. They forgot what built Dollar Thrifty into such a prize.

    Advice to Management

Take a good look around. You're next.
