I worked at Domtar full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Domtar offers fantastic benefits and a high rate of pay for entry level employees. The medical benefits and employee incentives are better than any other job I have ever held.

    Cons

The work is very dangerous. Close proximity to heavy machinery that you are warned over and over again 'can and will kill you' can cause a lot of anxiety, which can become unbearable for many when mixed with an almost unreal amount of heat. Paper making involves a lot of water and steam, and their facilities do not circulate air very well. Training is long, and while they claim it takes a very hands-on approach, this really just means that they expect you to learn on the job, and there are very good chances that the person assigned to train you will take the opportunity to sit in the break room while you do their job for them. The company also uses a southern swing shift for lower ranking employees, making a sleep schedule a difficult thing to set in stone.

    Advice to Management

Management must have a better system of accountability for trainers. My experience would have been much less harrowing, I feel, if my trainer had taken a more active role instead of just occasionally poking his head out of the break room to tell me I was 'doing fine.'

I have been working at Domtar full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great 401k match; the benefits are rich and the pay is very competitive.

    Cons

Salary positions feel more like an hourly time-puncher. To leave 15 minutes before 5pm, you better work through lunch or come in early. Not all departments are time way but HR is not aware how to treat salary employees.

I worked at Domtar full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They really care about your education and will put you where your interests are. Have the flexibility to work overtime. Great place to learn as well as awesome salary for college students

    Cons

Supervisors play the "I'm better than you" B.S With everyone that works with them, they generally work poorly as a team together because they think they know best or more without looking at all facets. Some are very manipulative and are not very understanding nor try to be. The younger managers have a hard time understanding work/life balance in fact, I don't think they care. A bit sexist at times....

    Advice to Management

Even if your employees is a genius, they may lack in other areas which seems to be a good portion of younger management. Learn to communicate well instead of the blame game or the "I know better" mentality and actually work as a team like you say you do. Investigations are poor as well....

I worked at Domtar full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Domtar pays an amazing hourly wage even at entry level. They have great benefits including a decent health plan and retirement options.

    Cons

The environment is very hot and the work never slows down. Although safety is the word on everyone's lips it seems to be just that. An empty word. The departments are run by the most senior hourly wage earners rather than management, therefor the mill retains an "old school" mentality of get it done fast and now unless management is watching.

    Advice to Management

Stop letting the inmates run the asylum. Foremen defer all responsibility and planning to older hourly workers who distribute the work loads unevenly and demand junior workers perform unsafe acts because "that's how we have always done it". Promoting foremen from within seems to be detrimental to safety and makes it difficult to establish a proper chain of command.
