I have been working at Douglas County School System full-time

    Pros

Each school is different, however I have found most colleagues to be great to work with. There are always those that will be miserable, but I choose to stay away from those types as much as possible.

    Cons

The district is very political and does not always have the best interest of its students in mind when making decisions. Teacher input is not valued at the central office.

I have been working at Douglas County School System full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

DCSS is a great school system with a small town feel. The administration makes sure you have the resources you need (I teach HS CTAE) and the teachers are supported. The county favors promotion from within, there is little turnover which is good because everyone knows their role and duties.

    Cons

Because the county is small, are quick to implement each change by the State. It is one thing to be in compliance, however it is another to adapt new policies before clarification has come down from the State. The Board supported a salary increase for the Super and has spent the last two years providing one time "bonus" checks to teachers to boost morale.

    Advice to Management

Teachers are the driving force in the school system, continue to support your teachers.

I have been working at Douglas County School System full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Not every school is the same: some schools seem to have their act together more than others. The ones that do have good academic achievement scores. These schools handle their discipline (as noted by ISS numbers) so issues don't fester.

    Cons

Because the school I work for is the way it is, there isn't much I can say other than con.

The school I work in has a lot of teachers that have been there a while and have been friends with the administrators since they were teachers. If you don't do exactly as they say and expect (and you have to mind read to do that), expect bad performance reviews and a short time at the school. Also expect to be bullied by a supervisor: no talking or reasoning, just being treated like a student when you're an adult. Don't expect building principals to have your back and support you and what you do: ALL discipline issues are on you the teacher.

    Advice to Management

At the district office: make sure the building principals have a viable behavior management plan for the building and back their teachers up. Without support in the classroom from the office, chaos will take hold.

At the school level: support your teachers. Back them up. If you're not, you're contributing to chaos in your building and problems will fester until you're forced to do something drastic.
