I have been working at Douglas Dynamics (More than a year)

    Pros

    Decent pay for the area.

Hard work is usually recognized with promotions.

    Get Saturdays and Sundays off.

Get 3 day weekends during the off season.

Pretty decent sized profit sharing bonuses during the 3rd and 4th quarters if its a good year.

    Lots of opportunity for overtime.

You can earn "Time For Results" which is an incentive based program that lets you earn an extra 2 or 3 days of time off.

    Cons

Most people are hired as temps and have to wait months, sometimes a year, to be hired on by the company and get any benefits.

    Insurance isn't great.

You only get 3 sick days a year... so don't get sick.

You work 10 hour shifts every day.

During the busy season you work 50 hours a week-- overtime is not optional.

You are forced to use half of your vacation time during the company shut down in July if shutdown lasts more than a week, which leaves you very little time off for the rest of the year.

Policy isn't always enforced, especially attendance policy. Many people who are often late or call out of work every Friday never get reprimanded.

While hard work is usually recognized with promotions, I've also seen lots of unwarranted promotions to employees who are consistently late and don't do much.

    Advice to Management

All managers from all business units need to be on the same page and follow the same policies. If one employee from one business unit is late and gets a chargeable, then you can't let another employee from a different business unit who is late just work late to make up for it and fix their time clock punch so they don't get a chargeable.

Managers need to actually take the ideas and input from their employees. Managers preach so much about how we all need to speak up and give ideas to better production, but when we do nobody listens.

Don't force us to use our valuable vacation time when we don't want to use it. If the company is forcing a two week shutdown, let us chose to either take it unpaid or use our vacation time.

Stop promoting lazy employees-- it brings down the morale of everyone else and makes us think, "why bother working hard if we can be rewarded for doing nothing".
