I have been working at Dow full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Safety is a priority. Most people are friendly. Work is easy enough, slightly repetitive. Mostly full time. Pay ok for area. Some possible advancement opportunities. Recently got a small PTO and get a yearly bonus if you work 1500 plus hours at 1% or 2% of your yearly wage.

    Cons

Dow does not employ it's production or logistics workers. Work is through a temp service. No medical benefits. They have regular shutdown days at least once a month which you may have no hours for the day. They also either "ramp down" during the winter in which some people "go to the bench" (they may work to cover days off or call ins otherwise sit and wait for ramp up), or we have a lot of lost days during the slow times for all production workers because they do not have work for us. We are currently working 1 to 4 days a week now going on 5 weeks.

    Advice to Management

It could be cost effective to hire your permanent production and logistics workers. You could then hire seasonal help during ramp up through the temp service. It is proven that people who are appreciated and really are a "part of the team" take pride and do a better job. Your quality and quantity would go up. You would have people wanting to work for your company rather than just going to the place to collect a paycheck. You would have control over who works there.

I have been working at Dow full-time

    Pros

    Benefits and stock purchase plan

    Cons

Extremely difficult to accomplish anything. Everyone wears a million hats. Overloaded with work. They run young engineers into the ground and the engineers leave to other companies very frequently. Every year management tells us not to spend any more money in May to help keep investors happy and keep the stock price looking good. They just want you to run to failure due to not being able to spend money.

    Advice to Management

Get more resources to help your current workers out. Everyone is extremely overloaded with work and nothing ever gets done. For every 1 action that gets completed, 50 more get created.

I have been working at Dow full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work-life balance is great. Training and coworkers are nice. Good recognition database. Safety

    Cons

They screen for cultural background/ ethnicity over hiring based on merit.
It's impossible to change roles without operations experience. Heard this twice, although I work hand in hand with operations. I now have several job offers from large refiners and consultants because of my operational experience....weird
Don't ever take managements word of mouth without it written in writing. I was promised funding for a masters, then told "sorry" after starting the program.
Management does a terrible job of deploying talents and finding hidden talents. "Stay in your box and do your job".

    Advice to Management

Break the silos! Hire people based on merit. Your driving cultural diversity so far it's become discriminatory. Don't deny interviews just because we didn't work directly for operations. Use your employee talent and stop worrying about what is in it for you.

    Pros

Autonomy is nice; you're given a set of tasks and you are trusted to get them done in a timely manner. No one is hanging on your shoulder.

    Cons

The company is always looking to strengthen its' bottom line and that means cost-cutting measures which are always inflicted on the contractors.

    Advice to Management

Treat you contractors as you would like to be treated in the work place. You could cut back on your high turnover rate if you would just treat people right.

I worked at Dow (More than a year)

    Pros

Maybe the pay was worth the short experience with the company

    Cons

The people at Dow are very clickish. A very homogenized group of people. Very difficult to make it in the company if you are not grown from within. Disappointed at the culture of the company. I would describe as "uninviting" and cold. I worked on the resin side of the business, maybe that is why it is plastic-like.

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to be cool and talk about diversity and actually do something about it.
