Company with strong ethic and safety values

    Pros

Within the company the are several opportunities for personal development and carrier growing in different businesses and geographical areas. Good salary compared to other similar companies and variabile pay really based not only to the company performances bur also to the personal goals achievement.

    Cons

Global standandards for all work processes are often difficult to apply in each organization. Poor chances to simplify or tailor them especially in the process safety areas.

    Pros

Dow is very transparent and provides information to employees fairly swiftly in comparison to other companies

    Cons

Company is constantly selling and purchasing assets, and you could end up being eliminated or your role.

Glad I left of my own free will

    Pros

Was once a world leader in invention and manufacturing. It was a great science and engineering company. Now merging with DuPont since neither could invent anything, the MBA's won. Awesome training and work experiences that are helping me excel at my new, much higher paying employer.

    Cons

Perpetually short on cash. You know how poor people say they didn't know they were poor? Dow's like that... Has been in a panic since the recession. Tried too hard to diversify and failed miserably. Should have stuck to what it was great at Has been the shrinking chemical company for more than a decade through asset sales and demoralizing layoffs

    Good company, good benefits

Apr 15, 2015 - Lab Technician in Hahnville, LA

    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Great benefits with safety as a major priority. The company offers stock options and bonuses to all employees.

    Cons

Management personal changes too often. Methods and practices also change too often. The company is always restructuring and cutting down positions which leaves larger work loads to remaining employees.

    Career and Growth

    Apr 9, 2016 -  in Eagleville, PA

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Company is great in terms of working environment, separation of roles and responsibilities, workplace ethics, safety, people leaders, annual bonuses, work life balance. There are silos that seem to restrict collaboration, but company is edging towards a more collaborative environment.

    Cons

Career and growth is non-existent except for top 2% of the population. Annual performance reviews and calibrations are an overhead IMO and company should do away with it. Careers are predominately determined at Midland. Employees are told that they are responsible for their own growth which implies no training, positioning for growth. Employee Development Plans exist on paper. The company is impacted by the cyclical nature of its business and budget cuts are inevitable towards the last two quarters. Work has to be planned around that unless you are working on larger multi-year programs Company is Midland, MI based. Living in a small town, where every third person is your colleague, is not for everyone. Most of IT organization is variable workforce, which causes constant flux of skills and knowledge. Innovation is a catchphrase, words more than action. Corporate strategy has been primarily growth through acquisitions and divestitures.

Great learning experience, very bad experience with middle management and HR

    Pros

I worked 17years for Dow. Great learning, excellent salary and benefits, worked in Europe and US, diverse colleagues. Lots of opportunities for study and personal development. I left the company as I was fed up with management and the company's short term vision. They let go one of my best co workers. I am now working for Exxon in Houston. Another giant company but I have to say more capable managers and even in the current downturn no layoffs or short term panic!

    Cons

HR departement (especially in Horgen Switzerland and Midland Michigan) are very eager to please the management instead of providing neutral , professional advice. Layoffs are random and seem to happen every 5 minutes. Performance system is a farce. I've seen high performing colleagues being told to leave. It effects the overall motivation and atmosphere and creates a sucking up effect and fear culture. Some very bad managers are in positions of power. Headquarters are in Midland Michigan, small-town mentality and all about Dow. You have to like it and it definitely doesn't help to attract top talent.
