    Pros

Dow is able to hire extremely talented, hard working professionals who are generally great team players. Management is transparent with employees and very professional.

    Cons

Work/Life balance can be an issue if you let it because Dow is a very lean organization. It is important to keep up with technology.

    Pros

Fairly decent pay and medical health insurance plan. Annual raises, although they are pretty small, typically. On the job training.

    Cons

No work/life balance; mandatory overtime and years spent on an overnight shift trying to make it to a daytime shift. Poorly executed performance reviews; completed by management personnel that have only talked to you a handful of times instead of people who actually work with you day-to-day. Strict policies regarding safety and harsh punishments, despite management not fully understaning them or how they pertain to our facility. Too much corporate bureaucracy that prevents anything from ever getting done. Those who do take an inovative initiative end up punished. Employees that utilize federally protected and/or company provided benefits end up on management's naughty list, which severely impacts chances for a promotion, raise or shift transfer.

Large chemical empire in a slow decline.

    Pros

Dow has some of the greatest engineers and scientists. If you are looking to learn, the resources are there. Dow focuses on learning and will happily send you to trainings and conferences. Work life balance is real and you are not expected to put in extreme hours with most weeks in the 40-45 hour range. You can be functionally incompetent, but as long as you follow the 'work process,' your job is almost guaranteed. (Pro?)

    Cons

Dow has a culture of "double think" and "double speak". Publically they say one thing, but privately their actions show the opposite intent. Their internal systems and bureaucracies extremely limit how fast they can react. It's often easier to keep something that is broken and inefficient vs. spending the time getting approvals and fighting tooth and nail to get it fixed. HR is incompetent, both locally and at corporate headquarters. My hiring process was the definition of "bait and switch." Pro-tip, get your relocation spelled out with dollar values in writing before accepting. Dow is permanently in a cost cutting mode. They have various names for it, like "Code Red", so prepare to have most of your budget requests denied. This is even if you have a good payback time frame and can justify it. Dow relies on contractors for nearly all services. Nearly 50% of the people you work with are not Dow employees. This includes engineering, pipe fitters, electricians, janitors, secretaries, EH&S, and more. This appears to be due to Dow's aversion to increasing headcount. Dow is obsessed with employe donations and involvement with The United Way. The more time and effort you put into the United Way, the faster you can expect that new promotion. There is high turnover in engineering and among young operators (those without pensions). Projects are routinely dropped and never picked back up, and you are almost always understaffed as you are looking to fill positions.

Awesome company, but you need to build your own career.

    Pros

Company culture and values are fantastic. You will find a very respectful and friendly work environment. The company is making some huge investments that will make Dow even stronger in the future.

    Cons

The trade off of having a great work life balance is that promotions come at a slower pace. We have a internal job posting system very well designed but very often they are filled without a real competition. Office politics is strong too.
