    A sinking ship

    Oct 5, 2022 - Anonymous Employee
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Some cool people, good amount of PTO, work-life balance, great mission

    Cons

Major lack of leadership and lack of transparency. The turnover rate is almost embarrassing. Unrealistic revenue expectations. DreamBox doubled in size at the height of the pandemic, and for whatever reason they think they are going to continue growing at that rate in a *normal* school year? There is complete disregard for what is actually happening in education and in school systems across the country. It’s great for a company to have big goals, but these extremely inaccurate revenue/growth predictions that were made cost a ton of people their jobs. If you weren’t already aware, they laid off a TON of talented people last month with no warning whatsoever. They do not care about their employees— at the end of the day all you are is an employee ID #. The best way to describe this company is controlled chaos. No one ever knows what is going on. The pay is also not competitive to other Ed Tech companies.

    Internal Culture vs. External Brand

    Aug 17, 2022 - Senior Program Manager
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

*Excellent product. *The "doers" level is amazing (if they stay...)

    Cons

*Lack of ownership and accountability stifles productivity (and innovation) *If you don't live in Product Development / Engineering or Sales, good luck making a case to invest in your tools and people. *Middle management through VP level are largely veterans of the company who have had little development training and are not equipped to lead high performing teams. *Benefits are mediocre at best for the technology industry. *External branding does not line up to internal values. *Development and coaching is not a priority for people leaders (even though we preach to be all about life long learning...) *Folks early in their career struggle here. Mightily. *The EdTech industry is flooded with quality products due to the influx in demand of 2020. This trend will not sustain, and is DreamBox really a top tool against the rest of the options in the market? Debatable.

    Out of Touch with Employees

    Nov 1, 2022 - Anonymous Employee
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

The middle management is great. They care about the employees and do what they can.

    Cons

Upper management is completely out of touch with the employee experience. Compensation for customer support is low for what skills the position requires. Low opportunity to move up and you aren't going to get a paycheck that reflects your skills.

    It used to be better

    Sep 14, 2022 - Account Manager
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

You get to work with great, highly professional teams. The benefits (PTO) are good and there is clear and significant effort to maintain a positive and accepting culture. You are treated like a professional and not micro-managed.

    Cons

Two purchases and a new funding source in a single year. Change in sales leadership and sales structure. Shifting territories with a high number of handoffs affecting relationship continuity for customers.

    Downward Spiral - Stay Away

    Oct 19, 2022 - Director
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

There are some genuinely good and nice people working here who care a lot about the stated mission of helping children learn. Health insurance benefit was decent and not too expensive.

    Cons

This is, by far, the most reactive company I've ever experienced. Following two blockbuster years in edtech due to additional education from the federal government, DreamBox is facing the cold reality of crowded marketplace and has no idea how to win. So the executive team reacts. And pivots. And reacts again. They have no plan and do not seem to understand that the boon years of 2020 & 2021 were a result of a flood of federal money into education and not because of anything DreamBox did well. Now that the market is normalizing, they are lost and either can't or won't acknowledge that the profitable COVID relief years are gone and will never come back. And, because of that, nearly 20% of the company was laid off in 2022 without a single executive losing their position. Rather than take a hard look at themselves and their lack of leadership, the executives opted for a mass layoff that protected their jobs at the expense of so many people who had nothing to do with the company's downward spiral. Despite urging from several employees, the executives refuse to come up with a cohesive vision or plan for the company and keep doubling down on their previous failed strategies. The leadership is tone deaf when fielding questions from the rank & file and clearly see themselves as special or smarter than everyone else. After the layoffs, execs held two separate internal town halls: the first of which was a prepared presentation with very little time for questions. The second town hall had a lot more time for questions but execs either dodged hard questions (e.g. Why didn't any of you lose your jobs in the RIF?) or provided non-answers. Despite positioning themselves as a tech company, DreamBox does not offer benefits commensurate with other tech companies. 401(k) match is abysmal and there is no unlimited PTO.
