I have been working at DuPont full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

DuPont focuses on safety training for all employees and contractors. DuPont is an international company that is currently undergoing a transition to being split into 3 focused companies and merging with Dow. The benefits at DuPont are industry standard and better than most as merit raises are given periodically and Overtime can be mandatory depending on the department. The Dayton site is improving the equipment in production, new guard house and pancake breakfasts and ice cream events are normal.

    Cons

In larger companies change is slow and DuPont rates high in that department. There is no formal plan in place for the Contract employees to become permanent employees. Due to budgetary limits there is no longer an onsite HR department.

    Advice to Management

The surveys that are conducted to check the climate of the workplace seem to be focused on improving the site and the morale in the workplace. I see improvement in the morale at the DuPont Dayton site. So the plan is actually working. Maintain the forward momentum.

    Pros

R&D has been stimulating and rewarding. Innovation has been broadly recognized, but that buys little regard In current atmosphere of short term thinking of dramatic cost cutting.

    Cons

Current situation very uncertain. Upcoming planned merger and split appears quite disadvantageous to employees in Delaware, with job cuts and forced relocation of employees to Iowa, Indiana and Michigan expected. Significant loss of younger talent ongoing.

    Advice to Management

Be honest about current climate. Try to retain some talent other than top executives, because future success depends upon more than a layer at the top. Many employees are fed up and waiting for separation package so as to be done with Breen Plan.

I worked at DuPont full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

DuPont does expose you to multiple areas of personal/professional growth. With the diversity of products and services DuPont offers, it's very easy to get exposure to a diverse amount of markets and job types which certainly helps your professional growth. In addition, DuPont is (or at least they used to be) pretty generous about allowing for opportunities for education and professional development. I was able to get a variety of leading and relevant certifications and degree (MBA) with DuPont's support.

    Cons

They are going through a major upheaval at this point in time which has caused the company to be more reactive than strategic, and more short term vs. long term focused. This results in a working environment that can be highly stressful, confusing, and unstable. People treatment behavior has lowered significantly and turnover is probably at an all-time high. DuPont used to pride itself on striving for World Class Manufacturing but now that it's laid off so many of it's continuous improvement and productions systems resources, it's all about getting to the next quarter targets...by any means necessary.

    Advice to Management

I understand the concept of stopping the bleeding, but it needs to be balanced with sound long term strategy so as not to create more bleeding! I just don't believe that purely reactive management and decision making will help even with the pending transition.

    Pros

Very safety conscious and excellent training availability if you were willing to seek it out. Pay was fair for the area, especially if you picked up a little bit of overtime here and there.

    Cons

Management was overall ineffective and does not really have a clue as to what actually happened on shifts. Usually about half the shift does the work while the other half will screw off. Also, if you get advanced training it is not very likely that you will get promoted locally from within. People in higher positions locally tend to be scared of people who are equally capable or superior to them in ability. Use this company to pay for schooling and training and look for opportunities elsewhere as they would prefer to keep you as a shift worker.

I worked at DuPont full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent people and diverse workforce. Very respectful and professional work environment. Good compensation and benefits. Beautiful new buildings at corporate headquarters in Wilmington, DE.

    Cons

Employee morale has been plummeting in recent years as the company goes through major restructuring and merger with Dow. Management's current expectations of "do more with less" can make workload feel unbearable at times.

    Advice to Management

Make sure employees feel recognized and appreciated during this tumultuous time. The next few years will be very challenging as employees are asked to take on more work while facing an uncertain future.

    Pros

    Nice opportunities many years ago.

    Cons

Nothing is stable or transparent. Leadership is 'leading' but no one follows, turn around. Core values must strengthen. Use of the words Core Values will not get us there.
