Was good but now circling the drain

Jan 2, 2016 - Principal Investigator in Wilmington, DE

    Pros

Respectful and collegial work environment Solid science and interesting projects Very good benefits though a bit worse every year

    Cons

Company is being dismantled. Terrible upper management with preference for white elephant projects like cellulosic ethanol. Always a manufactured crisis. Bonus only good in 1 of the last 10 years. Getting promoted is like pulling teeth.

It used to be a good place to work...

    Pros

It used to be a good place to work. It used to have top salaries and benefits.

    Cons

Continual cuts in pay and benefits over the years. New cuts in vacation and health care benefits announced today (10/6/09) following previous cuts in pension, pay, healthcare and other benefits over the last several years. I have been here 27 years and this company has continually gone down hill after the first 10 years. This is a company rapidly declining and it does not appear there is anyone in upper management able to cope with this decline.

Short Term Financial Focus - No Longer a Science-Driven Company

May 3, 2022 - Principal Investigator in Wilmington, DE

    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - Great brands and market recognition. - Generally talented people and teams on the technical side. - Good support and hybrid work for established employees, but more difficult for new employees to get connected. - Unique and interesting technologies spread across different units.

    Cons

    - In product development, lots of business/technology silos due to constant divestitures/acquisitions to please shareholders since 2017 Dow merger/split. This lowers stability and trust, leads to collaboration difficulties, and increases barriers to market wins. - Upper management have little technical literacy and therefore capacity to integrate R&D to create value for end customers. 'Strategy' consist of segmenting units by short term financial metrics and backward looking consultant decks, rather than in dept understanding of end market or technology fit for sustainable long term growth. - Constant reorganization- rounds of cutbacks, M+A synergies and integration (layoffs)- provided ample opportunity to self-promoting bean counters to entrench across middle management by parroting upper management talking points and/or leaning in on DEI.

    A great place to work

    Apr 17, 2012 -  in Parkersburg, WV

    Business Outlook

    Pros

There are always challenging technical problems to work on. There is a true safety culture that strives for the goal of zero. Compared to most other companies, the benefits package is very generous.

    Cons

There is not enough communication from upper management on the direction of the organization. Once you reach a certain level, you tend to plateau with little possibility for further advancement.

    Pros

The Pay is great and I wish too build a career here based off that and hopefully things will get better in the future as far as treatment from management

    Cons

Inconsistency and undervalued as an employee upper management looks down on the workers as proved during contract negotiations ( The NoteBook )
