I worked at Dublin City University (More than a year)

    Pros

learning about various topic when working for the Business School
teaching experience along the way with various levels (masters, bachelors)

    Cons

    extremely lonely
    very messy and complex administration
    cold atmosphere
    all about politics
if you are looking for warm atmosphere, human interactions, just don't even apply to the business school. It's all about work and poker faces.

    Advice to Management

Provide some guidance for main point of contacts when starting
Provide more structure and follow up for daily tasks
Provide more visibility on the short and long term

I have been working at Dublin City University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

DCU's famous sense of enterprise and 'can do' makes it a brilliant university to work in - the best I have worked at in my 20-year career in universities. At the moment, this comes from the President who is easily the most inspiring in the country. A second-to-none student experience is shortly to get even better with massive levels of investment already seeing transformed campuses

    Cons

Although new investment is plentiful - departmental operating budgets are tight and DCU is one of those universities where sometime too much decision-making is in the hands of administrators rather than teaching and research academics.

    Advice to Management

The President is the best in Ireland and there are many talented people at the top of DCU. The only small thing would be to ensure that major investments are implemented on academic need not on administrative growth

I worked at Dublin City University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Some very friendly staff. Laid back atmosphere. Light teaching and research expectations which can be a benefit at times.

    Cons

Poor use of university land (including library cafe in the basement). Main gripe would be lack of visibility of colleague achievements, interests and ongoing projects - stifles opportunities/ease of collaborating. Staff often 'out of office'.

    Advice to Management

Promote individual and team interests and achievements both inside and external to the university.

    Cons

Progress can be hindered at times due to politics but this is to be expected in a University environment and is offset by the positives

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing!
