I have been working at Duke University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent health benefits. Vision plan is pretty good and employees get a BIG discount if they get their lenses/frames at the Duke Eye Center. Retirement contribution starting at 8.9% IF you're in a salaried position.

    Cons

Dental plans aren't very good compared to industry. Difficult to move upward into new opportunities in different departments/organizations. NO retirement contribution or matching if you are an hourly employee. Excessive amount of very difficult people to work for due to tenure. If your position loses its funding, it is almost impossible to find another position and there is NO severance.

I have been working at Duke University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I came here for the chance to offer my daughter a better way of life, and to give her the best access to the college benefit that Duke offered

    Cons

Pay does not keep up with the national rate, and the chance to advance in this area is only given to a chosen few.

    Advice to Management

Give more opportunity for advancement to your current employees, and give raises that make a difference.

    Pros

Stipend goes a long way in durham and it is a great place to live. There are also lots of graduate student and motivated undergraduates to work with.

    Cons

All the normal cons of academia... little pay for lots of work, professors are not great at management.

I worked at Duke University as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

They have a great onboarding program that focuses on teaching really valuable customer service skills, the technical education is extremely useful, and the staff is super friendly!

    Cons

Perhaps hours and scheduling, but nothing really comes to mind as a con.

    Advice to Management

    Keep it up!

I worked at Duke University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The pros of working in the athletic department are free attendance to men's basketball games.

    Cons

The cons of this work are everything else. You will be worked into the ground, paid next to nothing (they even have interns who work 80 hour weeks doing the same job as full time staff). Your managers will be bitter because pay raises and promotions are few and far between and rarely does the most capable person earn the career advancement they deserve.

    Advice to Management

Quit the bs and treat your employees like the employees of the Fortune 100 level enterprise they are in effect working for.
