I worked at Duke University Health System full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

There is always something new and exciting going on at Duke Medical Center. For motivated employees with initiative, the opportunities to advance your career are endless. While salaries are lower than industry in some ways, the benefits are outstanding.

    Cons

As with all large organizations, your mileage may vary and will depend on your department and/or supervisor. I was fortunate enough to work in a fantastic group with great colleagues and a supervisor who treated everyone professionally. I recognize that this is not true across the board.

    Advice to Management

Make it easier to fire people. Working with HR to get rid of employees who under-perform is very difficult and wastes time and money. There are career individuals who know how to "work the system" and the Duke HR process often supports this. Improve accountability in departments that serve others within the system, ie, HR, parking, finance, etc. These departments are very difficult to work with as a high-level manager.

I worked at Duke University Health System full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Good team. Some excellent employees. Very smart staff in general.

    Cons

Extremely weak leadership at the top. The whole place is run by only a few people who are very outdated in their thinking. Extremely weak HR and Talent Management practices. Some very poor decision-making at the top.

    Advice to Management

Allow your experts to do their jobs. Revamp leadership model.

I have been working at Duke University Health System full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Working with World Class Physicians. Duke Medicine name carries weight in job market.

    Cons

IT leadership is the worse. They have no plan and punish staff for their failures. Staff has no voice and there is no communication from management to staff. Most of the IT leadership lack technical knowledge and skills. They commit to deliver solutions that are not feasible. They leave it to staff to communicate that the solution is not feasible to the client. The client gets mad at the staff and then refuse to work...

    Advice to Management

Hold the leadership responsible for their poor management, direction and failure to produce results. World Class caregivers deserve world class IT professionals and support. Staff overworked and constantly have to change direction on projects due to lack of management and or strategy.
