Good for learning methods, bad for making good money and buying a house on a single income.

    Pros

Learning opportunity, room for growth if a novice, Biostat leadership is very nurturing, Biostat coworkers open to help and train. Benefits are absolutely stellar. You won’t find a better benefits package. But it doesn’t make up for the low pay.

    Cons

Low pay, very low pay, short ceiling on promotions, experience means little when it comes to leadership opportunities. the leadership that aren’t the Biostatisticians are way too willing to let the Biostatisticians take the fall for their decisions. Biostatisticians are not treated as experts. The processes for promotions and salary raises were never clear and they lost a lot of great Biostatisticians because of that. Diversity seems like lip service there. Asian students were told not to speak their native language even when just talking to each other and the professor who told them that stepped down just for the business side to hire her husband as a Biostatistician.

Great place to work but hard to get raises

Jun 22, 2022 - Research Technician II in Durham, NC

    Pros

Great coworkers. Lot of opportunities to learn! Amazing research

    Cons

They don’t pay you enough and have an algorithm that determines pay so you can’t negotiate. They also are very nit picky on relevant experience. If you are hired before July and the minimum pay for your postion goes up, you’ll keep your starting pay until the next July even if you were hired in june.

    Pros

Benefits Duke name Beautiful campus Good clinical care provided

    Cons

I've worked here for over a decade and had some really great work experiences. However, the last couple years have taken a turn for the worse as new senior leadership within my department joined. I have never felt less valued. Toxic work environment. Preferential treatment to select employees coming from senior leader's prior organization. Limited opportunity for advancement. Losing providers, nurses, and other staff left and right with significant concerns with the remaining employees' well-being.

    Jun 15, 2022 - Medical Laboratory Scientist

    Pros

Good for learning new skills, doctors are always nice and polite to lab staff and go out of their way to assist with testing.

    Cons

Pay is not competitive, Paid time off has to be scheduled or it is a reprimand, family emergency's or personal health emergencies count as unscheduled time off , too many unscheduled time off causes you to be fired. Paid is based off experience only. High turn over rate, management does not get reprimanded for unscheduled time off, but workers do. Benefits are not good. Laboratory equipment is out of date, breaks down frequently and needs replacement.
