I have been working at Duke University Health System full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Enjoy the patient population and staff and the area of Durham, NC. Patients get good care and I have faith in the medical system

    Cons

Lower pay than should be for metropolitan area. Surprisingly, the health system does not value lactation in general. ...but there is going to be a change since they are moving to Baby Friendly!! Normally LC's are with the same model as Clinical Specialists and are salaried with their own department and all that goes with a 'lactation department'. At the big Duke Hospital and the pediatric offices this is the case...

    Advice to Management

Lactation Consultants are Clinical Specialists and are normally treated as specialist in their field and are salaried. The average salary is $72-$75 in the USA and in a city over $90k. Duke Healthy Systems is all over the map with how they treat Lactation Consultants. At big Duke they have their own department and wear professional dress with lab coats, they have a large office and each with their own desk and computer,...

I have been working at Duke University Health System full-time

      Pros

Good Benefits Job Security Good training Lots of opportunity for growth or changing departments

      Cons

Low low low pay. Seriously I cant wrap my mind around how Duke gives so little for their support staff. I get that they give all their money to Drs and Nurses but with the money they make off of parking at the hospital for a week they could give some serious raises to PRMO staff.

      Advice to Management

Pay.People.More... there is nothing more demotivating than knowing that the same jobs at other companies pay more.

I worked at Duke University Health System full-time for more than 4 years

      Pros

Good Benefits (but you pay for them)

      Cons

Low pay, no room for growth, expect 20/hour work from you for 8/hour

      Advice to Management

LISTEN TO YOUR STAFF! YOU ARE LOSING A LOT OF GREAT TALENT! TOO MUCH COMPETITION AROUND THIS AREA FOR MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS TO NOT!

      Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Duke University Health System full-time for more than 6 years

      Pros

World Class Physicians World Class Research Facility

      Cons

Low Pay Focus on bottom line Employees are seen as a 'number' Antiquated thought processes, no innovation or cutting edge practices from a nursing perspective. Highly physician driven. Nurses have little to no voice within the institution. Far too many new graduate nurses in the ranks.

      Advice to Management

Retention is the biggest issue in the health system. A model of hiring and training cohorts of new graduate nurses to patch your hemorrhaging of experienced staff is not an ideal solution and not what is best for patient care.
