Mental Health Specialist II

8 years experience in Social Work. Have undergraduate degree in Sports Management and Masters in Social Work. Have taken the Licensing exam 3 times and failed. Will be 31 in January and am wondering whether I should continue this career path. If I did decide on another career path I have no idea what that would be. Currently making around 60k, would be happier in the 70-80 range. Wondering if HealthCare is worth it long term.. Any suggestions?

    Pros

Generally good benefits if you sign up for one of their Duke healthcare plans and also take advantage of employee wellness activities, and etc.

    Cons

Parking; pay is not commensurate with the volume and level of work expected for a lot of the lower and mid-level, non-managerial positions; it's hard to advance in some areas; only allowed minimal salary increases when taking hire level position (in a lot of cases); and often over-worked if in salaried role.

Disappointing for a nationally recognized hospital system

Jan 7, 2020 - Registered Dietitian in Durham, NC

    Pros

PTO is generous, although up to you to find your own coverage and you are often contacted when away from office. RDs are exempt employees and salaried which is nice.

    Cons

No clinical ladder or recognition for advanced practice. Lack of clinical space/resources for RDs. Short staffed most of time so little ownership over work. Use of clinical and admin time not protected or maximized. Clinical policies are outdated and lump adult, pediatrics, inpatient and outpatient operations all together. Policies are also not uniform and change without notice. Seniority is not respected. Management is very disconnected from daily clinical operations and clueless to roles and responsibilities of RDs. Employees often must above their supervisors to bring awareness of incompetence to upper management, although it is also understood that there is little reprimand. MDs have even stepped in to attempt to aid in clinical direction of RDs due ineffective management. Most people are severely overworked without job recognition or financial compensation. Culture of extreme burnout, high employee turnover, losing lots of great talent. Also surprised how lacking the benefits are. They are not only expensive but pretty bad coverage. We work at a hospital and half the services I provide are not even covered by my own insurance. Duke does not match or contribute anything towards 401K for first year. Parking costs are extremely high and rising.

    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - A good place for someone to gain experience - Benefits are decent (however, salary is not competitive)

    Cons

    - Below market wages - No incentives to keep current employees (it’s cheaper to hire new grads) - Costly and inconvenient parking - Expensive not that great cafeteria food and small portions

    Decently staffed before the pandemic

    Pros

Free parking and lots of resources to advance up the clinical ladder… specifically at Duke Regional Hospital.

    Cons

Currently poor staffing of nurses and nurse aides. Lack of appreciation for the hard work people put in from upper management. Place feels like an assembly line at a factory.

    Review of working at Duke

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Has good benefits and some of the clinics have free parking for employees

    Cons

Management does not know protocols/policies in order to guide employees, favoritism, poor orientation to jobs, only one day of training, not a team work force, it's all about ME, MY and MINE.

    A great place to work

    Pros

Great team, at least in my department, from the patient care techs up to the department head, professional behavior, individualized, thorough, training, flexibility. Everyone pitches in to help be it training or patient care. A lot of emphasis on diversity.

    Cons

Parking can be expensive and quite a hike.
