I have been working at Duke University Health System full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good benefits, nice employees in my building, overtime opportunities

    Cons

Poor pay, very outdated and hard to navigate website that I was expected to know how to use within the first week, rude HR and IT people, and have to PAY for parking? It's like I'm having to pay for the ability to work here.

    Advice to Management

Employees should not have to pay to park.

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in Durham, NC

I worked at Duke University Health System full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Great health insurance options, flexible work from home options depending on the department you work in. Yearly merit salary increases have been consistent.

    Cons

If working on main hospital in Durham employees have to pay for parking. Promotions/ opportunities for are not supported fully for staff currently employed, often they look outside.

    Advice to Management

Invest more in promoting from within. While in theory "work culture" is taught its not really demonstrated thru-out the Health System( DUHS, PDC, PRMO. CPDC, DUAP) this really needs to improve from Sr Management down to staff.

      Former Employee - Registered Nurse

I worked at Duke University Health System for more than 6 years

      Pros

Good insurance benefits available, options for onsite earning of continuing education credits, prestige of being employee of a major medical health system

      Cons

Have to pay for parking and be shuttled in from offsite. Promoting political correctness can take priority over talent, education and experience when it comes to promotions.

      Negative Outlook

I have been working at Duke University Health System full-time

      Pros

Great benefits! I work in a new unit so all of the equipment is new. Most of the staff is friendly and helpful.

      Cons

Disregard of other responsibilities (ie. family, school, etc.) Pay for parking.

      Advice to Management

Taking better care of employees and caring about their work/life balance is crucial towards having employees who care about their job and are happy to come to work. During orientation they talk about valuing and taking care of patients, their families and each other, but I have yet to see that in play.

I have been working at Duke University Health System full-time

        Pros

Duke has fantastic name recognition and is the premier medical system in the area. Great opportunities to work with lots of different backgrounds. Very diverse and cosmopolitan. Relatively good resources. Coworkers are very friendly and welcoming. The campus is absolutely beautiful year round.

        Cons

As mentioned in other comments, the parking system is pretty bad. It seems that all employees pay for parking. Some parking areas areas are off campus and you have to take a shuttle from the lot. Some parkings areas are unpaved and get quite muddy in the frequent rainy weather. The area around campus and the surrounding city can be quite dangerous. There seems to be reports...

        Advice to Management

Invest in working out a better parking system, and invest back into the community to try to eliminate surrounding low income areas.

I have been working at Duke University Health System

        Pros

Decent health benefits, tuition reimbursement, pride in the Duke name, 403(b) retirement plan (but no company matching), healthcare and childcare flexible spending accounts

        Cons

Don't feel management recognizes the talent and potential in some of their employees. Management needs to give these people the tools/training they need to help them succeed or advance, or they are going to lose those good employees. Also, if you work at big Duke, parking is an issue and you have to pay for parking in the parking deck.

        Advice to Management

Don't keep everyone in the dark so much. Recognize/reward good employees. Teach employees with great potential to keep them interested/motivated. Stop adding more clerical work and disruptions to work flow, and expecting that turn around times for labs will still be met.
