I worked at Duke University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The pros of working in the athletic department are free attendance to men's basketball games.

    Cons

The cons of this work are everything else. You will be worked into the ground, paid next to nothing (they even have interns who work 80 hour weeks doing the same job as full time staff). Your managers will be bitter because pay raises and promotions are few and far between and rarely does the most capable person earn the career advancement they deserve.

    Advice to Management

Quit the bs and treat your employees like the employees of the Fortune 100 level enterprise they are in effect working for.

    Pros

    Some very bright, curious students

    Cons

I was asked if I had a family in the interview and if that would be a "problem." Openly sexist comments among the faculty in my department. One professor bragged he had a girl who was a model in his class; one commented that girls cannot concentrate. Total boys' club atmosphere. Hiring is not based on job performance but on cronyism. Rumors of misconduct go unaddressed.

    Advice to Management

Do more than pay lip service to diversity. The entire school culture needs an overhaul, as repeated instances of racism, sexual assault, and hazing demonstrate.

I worked at Duke University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Great Vacations benefits for staff.

    Cons

Managed by Narcissists surrounding themselves with people-pleasers because they love to have their ego constantly stroked and affirmed and they only want to hear positive things about themselves. Lies are put on reviews and employees are forced to sign or be terminated.

    Advice to Management

Resign from your position because you're despised by everyone around you!

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Duke University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits and very steady work cycle... if this is what you're looking for. If you are hired at management level or above, you may have more flexibility, but anything below that places you in the middle or bottom of a huge, bureaucratic system that discourages any kind of change.

    Cons

There are a lot of cons in this position and specifically regarding the culture at Duke, generally. Encouraged to sit at your desk from 9-5 even if you only have a few hours of work. Wastes human resources and discourages anyone with talent from becoming better or pursuing more responsibility. Please keep in mind I'm speaking specifically about my experience as a staff person at one of Duke's professional schools. Mid-level management is a huge road block and ethically speaking, treats direct reports with disrespect. In my position there has been lots of turnover-- a new person each year for the past 4 or 5 years. You would think this sends a signal, but surprisingly, it hasn't yet. Fundraising is beholden to big donors, even at the expense of the University's mission of educating students. Overall, I would never recommend this working environment to anyone.

    Advice to Management

Open your eyes. Invest in your employees. Communicate in a way that isn't passive-aggressive or patronizing. Give people at least one reason to be excited about work. Take yourself less seriously-- people will enjoy you more!
