I have been working at Duke University (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people I work with are very friendly, very excited, and very good at what they do. Facilities are top notch, as are technical resources.

    Cons

For a top school, the administration treats graduate students a lot more poorly than other institutions I'm familiar with, especially in regards to the amount of time and funding available.

    Advice to Management

Please seriously reconsider the continuation fees, it doesn't really help anyone. Do you really need that extra $3000 a semester from people who can barely afford it in an area with skyrocketing housing costs?

I worked at Duke University (More than 8 years)

    Pros

benefits, pay ok, make good friends,

    Cons

Little to no teamwork, unfair working terms, supervisor never around when needed, blocked attempts to relocate / change jobs, employees pay for parking

    Advice to Management

You should never hire or appoint someone who says in their own interview, "I don't get along with people..." but can speak Spanish is not a legitimate reason to hire that person to oversee nor run the team

I have been working at Duke University full-time

    Pros

The facilities make for a safe and clean research environment. Professors are open to collaboration with others. The classes offered can be useful.

    Cons

The benefits seem like they are frequently getting cut. The grad students may unionize which may impact salary/benefits. The environment is competitive to a level that it is nit constructive.

    Advice to Management

Benefits were promised to me during recruitment which are not provided anymore (use of gym etc.). Parking prices are ridiculous and increase every year while my stipend is not always increasing. These are things that need to be included in grad student packages.

    Pros

Most students are wonderful to work with. Great benefits package. Most people are attracted to the tuition benefits for children. Most people seem over qualified for their job.

    Cons

Can feel like a hostile work environment. Poor culture among employees. Lots of turnover in low level positions.

    Advice to Management

More management training. Need a system to evaluate managers so those who need help can get it.
