I got a referral to Google, and wanted to know what role/s I should apply for that would be easier to get my foot in the door. My background: Working in business consulting rn (2 months in). Graduate degree in engineering management from Duke University. Worked for 4 years at a Fortune 500 before grad school, in Ops and Corporate Affairs.

    Great place to do research

    Dec 1, 2022 - Research Scientist

    Pros

Great campus, many great and convenient places to eat breakfast, lunch, dinner

    Cons

Tough to get parking - had to pay almost $1,000 a year for a parking garage pass and still had a ~10 to 15 minute walk (outdoors) to get to my building.

    Adequate

    Dec 2, 2022 - Administrative Director

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Good benefits, enlightened community. In my field, research administration, there are a lot of training resources.

    Cons

Low pay. Management and IT systems who act like it's the 90s. Universities are run by faculty who might be brilliant in their fields, but are typically poor at business administration. Lots of bad decisions are made with hubris. And the opinions of inexperienced, clueless people with Ph.D.s are held in much higher regard than those of talented employees with decades of experience. Do not recommend.

    Great place for training

Nov 21, 2022 - PhD Candidate in Durham, NC

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Great place for a PhD in terms of access to core resources, other labs/collaborators, and new technology.

    Cons

Treatment of graduate students and postdocs could be significantly improved. Specifically, there should not need to be a free food pantry on campus - all students/trainees/employees should be paid enough that they do not need to worry about how they are going to eat.

    Pros

You get to work with a lot of brilliant people. They pay grad students well compared to other universities in the area and enough to cover cost of living.

    Cons

It's getting better, but still not enough parking. Get on the waiting list for the better parking lots ASAP.

Great community of colleagues. Stronger listening from leadership needed.

    Oct 13, 2022 - Anonymous Employee
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

The Duke community is full of amazing faculty and staff who are incredible colleagues. The students are truly doing incredible things and supporting them through any work area of Duke is meaningful.

    Cons

Leadership in some divisions needs to listen more to staff instead of immediately defending policies that are outdated. This would help to maintain the environment that has drawn so many to Duke. More growth pathways within an office and division are needed. Appropriate use of promotions and salary increases, reviewed often to celebrate staff who are exceling. Benefits are strong, but salaries are weak in some areas.
