Fantastic place to work but has it's share of issues, too. Overall, great people. Great city on a Great Lake.

    Pros

Room to stretch your legs as a writer at a paper that still values accurate, fair and in-depth journalism. Can learn new skills. Work both independently and as a team. Fast-paced, challenging yet fun industry. Decent pay and benefits.

    Cons

Industry continues to struggle and so does the paper as it tries to find its place in the (mostly free) digital media era. Not a huge fan of its corporate owners. Pay and benefits on the decline.

    It was lackluster.

    Pros

They are flexible and the atmosphere was pretty laid back. They are fairly open with their employees and are pretty good about letting you know what is going on with the company.

    Cons

Too many of the higher management is not very good at what they do. Some departments can be "cliquey", leading to poor candidates getting promoted in some instances.

    Pros

The newspaper provides a valuable service to its customers. The employees I worked with were committed to accurate and interesting coverage of news in Duluth and the surrounding area.

    Cons

Declining subscriptions to print media has resulted in fewer jobs.

    Pros

The reporting and copydesk staff were wonderful: immensely hardworking, generous, good writers, idealistic.

    Cons

The management imposed by the Fargo-based purchasers of the newspaper was inimical to quality.

    Business in decline

    Pros

Interesting industry to be in right now with lots of changes if you survive long enough.

    Cons

The main interest by management is to cut costs/people and manage by the numbers. Publisher really doesn't have an interest in the community or people working there, but rather whatever can get him up the corporate ladder.

Good place to work for the experience

    Aug 5, 2009 -  in Duluth, MN

    Pros

Good place to gain experience in many areas due to doing more with less employees.

    Cons

Pressure to accomplish more with less is constant and threat of layoffs are constant. Management tends to make decisions without knowledge of how it affects the workforce and training for new assignments is seriously lacking.

    Pros

Learned a lot about the business of newspaper production, distribution and what the power of a single placed ad can do if it is done right.

    Cons

Not enough business for the amount of sales representatives. More education on the internet sales and how they apply to the clients. Something more tangible to show during presentations. IPAD or Tablet.

    Pros

The people and the energy working for a regional newspaper made you proud to be part of the community.

    Cons

The outsourcing of jobs and most management decisions being made remotely by people who do not understand the local market

    Black hole

    Pros

Fair camaraderie among the rank and file

    Cons

Arrogant, out-of-touch senior management. Jaw-dropping nepotism. Below-average pay, especially for those working undesirable night and weekend shifts. (Many newspapers pay extra to the workers who get those shifts.)
