I worked at E*TRADE Financial full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Paid classroom Series 7 instruction, a great place to learn about the brokerage industry, lots of free lunches, overall great coworkers

    Cons

Lateral moves across departments disguised as "growth opportunities." You're pretty much stuck in customer service once you start. In some roles, you're only chance of growth is to leave the company. Still, no pay for sales leads that you must generate for FCs. Nonexistent equity benefits after the initial restricted stock grant several years ago

    Advice to Management

Do more to become a proactive company rather than reactive. Stop focusing so hard on the numbers/stats of your FSRs. Equity compensation would be nice.

    Pros

A great place to begin your career; in addition, upper management truly cares about your success. Also, the training for the series 7 and series 63 is truly incredible.

    Cons

I have no cons to say about the company at this time. Show up on time everyday and come ready to put in a hard days work, and your willingness to succeed will be recognized.

    Pros

    Good people, casual office environent

    Cons

Massive time and adherence micromanagement, soul-draining and exhausting work, very little opportunity to apply critical thinking , little room for cross-departmental movement (once you are in customer service, you are there to stay)

    Advice to Management

Provide a less demeaning compensation structure. When employees perform well on the job, give them an opportunity to speak with a manager regarding their future with the company, not a Snickers bar and a pat on the back

I worked at E*TRADE Financial full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Top notch training and support to obtain your Series 7 and 63. New hire training process aka their incubator is a well thought out program that decently prepares for the overall job (taking the exams and their new hire program lasts around 4 months). You are a jack of all trades and you receive valuable high level education of the financial services industry including most importantly your licenses which you can take anywhere ;).

    Cons

Now the CONS! After the first couple of months the position starts to erode and drain your inner spiritual, emotional, and high level creative thought patterns. After a few months you feel that you are a robot trapped in some Bill Murray Groundhog Day nightmare with no light at the end of the tunnel. Bringing a flask is strongly encouraged! Finally and one of the most important point is that I felt there was little room for growth to actually make a living (40k-50k to me is not cutting it)...their financial consultant sales roles are a joke and you cant really control or manage a business as you see fit...there are only robo advisor products and a set list of pre-approved ETF's and mutual funds to sell. So you are really constrained by the companies policies and products. So overall, it's a great company to get your feet wet in the industry and learn the basics but not for a career.

    Advice to Management

All employees should receive stock options and ESPP shares regardless of position and need to change their sales/consultant positions if they want to reduce turnover. In addition their technology/website is lagging many features/functionality of other competitors like Ameritrade and Schwab and is in dire need of an upgrade on back and front end of the house.

I worked at E*TRADE Financial full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Easy introduction to the industry. training for securities licenses. extensive overtime opportunities. if you play your cards right, you can be manager in 2-3 years (i did not, nor want to)

    Cons

overworked constantly. no recognition of performance or ingenuity. each individual works for themselves, passing off the buck to someone else as needed. below average intelligence and way outdated systems. systems break at least twice a week.

    Advice to Management

don't work your service staff so hard. fix the issues with software and performance. stop working off a decade old business model.

I worked at E*TRADE Financial full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Most managers are knowledgeable.
-Company pays for your tests and licenses.
-Overtime work available to bolster your paycheck.
    -Good chance for advancement eventually.
    -Overall company is run well

    Cons

    Specifically Customer Service:
-Monotonous call center customer service work that will crush your soul; have to become a mindless drone to work here for longer than 6 months.
-Once you are a customer service employee you will never be able to move anywhere else in the company; other hiring managers will never consider you.
-Every minute of the day is tracked and measured; you are not an adult who is trusted to do their work, you are a shift worker with exact times given to you every day for breaks and a short lunch.
-You will be compared to your peers based on generating sales leads from existing customers; team managers will hound you endlessly about bugging existing customers to speak to salesmen.
-Training has gone downhill and become simply watching videos on a computer; your on the phone training will be done by helpers who are also less than knowledgeable so you will not be fully ready to start the job when you join a team.
-It's a job. It pays. If you are looking to make a difference, learn, or matter at all then this isn't for you. If you can handle the above and get paid doing it then go for it. There are definitely worse companies to do this work for.
