    Pros

Really friendly & smart people outside of NYC. The team in Arlington is great and always ready to help each other.

    Cons

CEO lacks direction, ethics and leadership qualities. He manages the company focusing short term goals. My guess is he can't wait for an acquirer to step in, so he can cash in big time.

    Advice to Management

CEO should retire as soon as possible.

I worked at E*TRADE Financial full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Co-workers are friendly, we were all in the same boat together sort of thing.

    Cons

    - Low and mid level management has been there a long time and are disengaged with no repercussions.
    - Just went through a major round of lay-offs, those left are assuming more will come at the end of the year once the acquisition of Options House if finalized.
    - Low morale due to layoffs and the "do more with less" attitude for several groups who were already doing more with less.
    - No advancement opportunities, hired outside for many positions instead of promoting within.

    Advice to Management

Get back to being that funky online trading platform, do what you do best. Quit trying to be old school finance.

Learned much in short timeframe. Excellent projects and career opportunity.

    Cons

Hire and lay-off people without foresight.

    Advice to Management

Respect the employees you hire and stop treating them like a meaningless number.

    Pros

Compensation is acceptable for the prevailing wage in the area, and the company has decent health insurance and 401k benefits.

    Cons

Hostile work environment; management has very low regard for employees and has no hesitation with openly mocking them in public even if they are present. Company has a high turnover (as the majority of its employees are H1-B hires).

    Advice to Management

Please instruct management to treat their employees with a modicum of respect. Expecting people not to be distracted when they are well within earshot is not realistic, and a cubicle wall is not soundproof. I saw several people break down in tears from verbal abuse.

    Pros

    - Good people
    - Used to be a good company with good culture, leads and flexibility.
    - Very friendly and welcome indian

    Cons

    - Poor working environment. e.g. slow development machine, painful code patch & promote, no admin privilege for your own laptop.
    - Poor Agile project management. Top or project lead doesn't know how to break down and size the tasks. They treat engineers like robots and expect all to support 7/24. Agile sizing is very unreasonable. They ask for high productivity. However, our products are delivered with lower quality.
    - People keeps leaving. Lots of people joined Etrade for a long time but they just left recently.
    - Working time changed and need to support longer time. Sr. Engineers are asked to support the early market so we need to come in office at 5. However, there are lots of meetings begin in the afternoon and you are expected to stay long time in the office. No personal life.
    - Too many managers and leads. Mangers and leads are very busy for attending and hosting meetings. However, they are far away behind the new technologies but still want to control and drive projects.

    Advice to Management

    - Expect your staff
    - Update your skills and hand on the projects
    - Promote the staff who really deserved but not based on color or race.

    Pros

    -Gain financial domain knowledge
-Push towards new technologies to replace old outdated one
    -Engineers are nice
    -Free coffee

    Cons

    -Management is ineffective
-Compensation package is not very attractive for a Silicon Valley company
-Over half of engineers in Menlo Park are hired contractors brought over from India
-ETrades turn over rate of its domestic engineers is through the roof and are just replaced with contractors from India
-The only thing higher than the turnover rate is the technical debt. Management taking on too many projects at once without enough enough resources, no testing practices in place, no code review procedures in place, etc. This leads to QA issuing dozens upon dozens of defects during testing.

Most people join ETrade and leave within a year or two. In the long run, working at such an outdated and terribly managed company is not worth the hassle to gain a few years of experience. It's Silicon Valley and there's plenty of opportunities, look elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Most companies with bad management are not oblivious to their shortcomings. They simply don't care enough to change. No amount of advice will change that.

I worked at E*TRADE Financial full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Younger work force. A great place to start out in the wealth management field. Training for series 7 and 63 is top notch.

    Cons

Call center. Very little opportunities to get out of the call center environment if you want to work behind the scenes. Your shift may change and you can do nothing about it. Upper level management is only concerned about your numbers ex. How long it takes you to get to the next call. How many customers you can sell financial consultants to and never see any monetary award for referring them.

    Advice to Management

You need to make referrals worth something to your reps. other then saying its just part of their job. Essentially this is a sales job without any compensation.
