    Pros

Great work/life balance. Varies from team to team, but generally people here work 9-5.

Most of the people are nice.

There is an employer match for 401K.

    Cons

The building is dark and musty. They have not replaced the carpets, ventilation, lighting, etc. in years! Facilities are so outdated, uninviting and an embarrassment to visitors.

No perks whatsoever. Only a slow water machine and cheap coffee. Awful and expensive cafeteria. No free trades.

    Extremely outdated technologies and tools.

Not diverse. Mostly older, Indian men. Younger and non Indian employees leave.

Not a social, fun place. Generally dead and quiet. People are afraid to speak up and get nervous when executives from NYC come to town. They come in suits, are not down-to-earth, and intimidate their employees. Poor leadership and ineffective managers.

I worked at E*TRADE Financial (More than a year)

    Pros

You can run with ideas and implement new processes with very little resistance. Opportunity to do work outside your job description that you would not get to do any where else. Lots of opportunity to get a wide range of experience

    Cons

Work life balance, this is a sweet shop. No one will ever believe you got to do all the things you did at your level and you did it all in the limited time you decided to stay. But when you average 65 to 70 hours a week its easy to get the experience. You will work more hours that you did in the Big 4. If your good, management will not allow you to move between internal jobs.

    Advice to Management

Work life balance and pay your resources

I have been working at E*TRADE Financial full-time

    Pros

Very smart people work here. They come from top consulting firms. It is located in the middle of Manhattan. Pay is competitive.

    Cons

Upper management lacks experience on how to lead people or run a business. Ambiguous titles like "Head of" or "COO of a department" make it difficult to distinguish who is the leader of each team.

Morale is low. Everyone is leaving. They can't seem to keep developers or any middle management. The man who ran the entire show is resigning at the end of this year.

    Advice to Management

Find an identity for this company.

    Pros

    I can't think of one.

    Cons

In my 15 years of IT career in bay area, I haven't come across a company like this. The management seemed to be stuck in 80s, their sole aim is to make life miserable for sub-ordinates. They don't respect privacy, family commitments.. extremely empathetic to people's personal life. They don't encourage people to speak their mind, albeit it might be a great suggestion. The HR is virtually non-existent and unprofessional.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the employees / contractors directly and try to bring in a change.

    Pros

Competitive Pay and that is about it

    Cons

The most toxic corporate culture that I have ever been a part of. Managers cursing at employees and VP peeing contests. E*TRADE almost collapsed during the economic crisis and the few people who stuck around were rewarded handsomely. Now that the company has rebounded, they are struggling to balance new talent with managers and directors who have no business being at that level. The company plays favorites and does not reward hard work. I have witnessed many talented individuals get stuck in their careers.

    Advice to Management

Send your managers to training and create better HR procedures to punish individuals who contribute to the toxic work environment. There are certain people who I have witnessed curse at their employees out in the open, but escape without any reprimanding from HR.

I worked at E*TRADE Financial full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The benefits are competitive. There is a great deal of opportunity in some departments, not all. The executive team fully supports risk management requirements.

    Cons

There are some in leadership positions who are poor leaders, especually in risk management. The primary goal us to compkete the governance framework at any cost. Previous leadership award winners are leaving and some without another job.
The CEO and EVPs are all males, the firm does not proactively promote female leaders at that level but recently promoted females at svp level.
Leadership development is dependent on the department, some groups fully develop their team whereas others, prevent managers from growing, those leaders micromanage and do not afford the opportunity too make decisions.
The current performance review process strongly encourages a bell curve, and, managers have the final say with no recourse by employees. That is, an evaluation and follow up on red flags is not performed by senior management.

    Advice to Management

Review the leadership team and create development programs for those who did not exhibit strong leadership skills. Evaluate the leaders performance evaluations on their teams, ensure that the data is factual, challenge red flags.
