I worked at E*TRADE Financial full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good Business model. Top 5 in the brokerage business. Customer Facing applications. Lots of projects and changes. Opportunity to grow till Principal Software enggn,

    Cons

Too many non-hands on folks . If on person is actually working on the issue or development task, there are 5 to 6 not working hands in the same project. It is just waste of money and resources.

    Advice to Management

Company need to flatten orginaization on tech side and make it hands on for all managers and sr manager. Only VPs should be non- hands on. No need of so many project manages. Currently the company is full of IT manages and project managers. Very good scope for improvement.

    Pros

    - Good people
    - Used to be a good company with good culture, leads and flexibility.
    - Very friendly and welcome indian

    Cons

    - Poor working environment. e.g. slow development machine, painful code patch & promote, no admin privilege for your own laptop.
    - Poor Agile project management. Top or project lead doesn't know how to break down and size the tasks. They treat engineers like robots and expect all to support 7/24. Agile sizing is very unreasonable. They ask for high productivity. However, our products are delivered with lower quality.
    - People keeps leaving. Lots of people joined Etrade for a long time but they just left recently.
    - Working time changed and need to support longer time. Sr. Engineers are asked to support the early market so we need to come in office at 5. However, there are lots of meetings begin in the afternoon and you are expected to stay long time in the office. No personal life.
    - Too many managers and leads. Mangers and leads are very busy for attending and hosting meetings. However, they are far away behind the new technologies but still want to control and drive projects.

    Advice to Management

    - Expect your staff
    - Update your skills and hand on the projects
    - Promote the staff who really deserved but not based on color or race.

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

    -Gain financial domain knowledge
-Push towards new technologies to replace old outdated one
    -Engineers are nice
    -Free coffee

    Cons

    -Management is ineffective
-Compensation package is not very attractive for a Silicon Valley company
-Over half of engineers in Menlo Park are hired contractors brought over from India
-ETrades turn over rate of its domestic engineers is through the roof and are just replaced with contractors from India
-The only thing higher than the turnover rate is the technical debt. Management taking on too many projects at once without enough enough resources, no testing practices in place, no code review procedures in place, etc. This leads to QA issuing dozens upon dozens of defects during testing.

Most people join ETrade and leave within a year or two. In the long run, working at such an outdated and terribly managed company is not worth the hassle to gain a few years of experience. It's Silicon Valley and there's plenty of opportunities, look elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Most companies with bad management are not oblivious to their shortcomings. They simply don't care enough to change. No amount of advice will change that.

    Pros

    Financial Domain. Stock brokerage industry.

    Cons

Bad management. You are put In multiple projects. They allocate your time as 10% in A, 5% in B etc Too much context switching giving you no time to concentrate on any single task.

Manager is ready to steal your work and present to SVP and Business that he alone created the solution. You are left puzzled. No credit to you at all. They treat you like slave monitoring your time-in and time-out.

As a developer you are supposed to handle QA, infrastructure. But they don't plan this effort. They think developer can handle anything. So you spend your personal time on this (nights and weekends).

Salaries are not great so better save yourself from this bad management.

    Advice to Management

Don't pamper Marketing Development Managers. If you cannot solve problems then don't become a problem. Don't think developer can do anything.

I worked at E*TRADE Financial full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company has good benefits, 401K matching, stock options, health, vision, dental and many others.

    Cons

E*TRADE Financial is on a downward spiral as it continues to lose good people to better employment opportunities. Depending on the location, the culture could be poisonous with senior management micro-managing and incompetent supervisors and managers. The company has lost its vision as it continues to flounder. Just look at the companies latest activity report and it is obvious that the company has some serious challenges. The company has set a precedent of being top heavy with VPs and Directors with no direct reports or management responsibilities and eventually the pendelum will start to swing back the other way. Rumors have already circulated that hiring freezes in various groups, e.g. technology, while other organizations hire overpaid and unqualified managers.

I would encourage current employees to take advantage of the ListenUp program to report wrongful behavior and provide the company feedback on how to improve, otherwise your situation will likely remain unchanged.

For individuals considereing employment at E*TRADE and are looking for a challenge, then E*TRADE is the place for you. You will likely not have a mentor and your supervisor or manager will be incompetent.

    Advice to Management

What happen to all that money you spent on training your managers to hire good people? How is that performance management process working out, did you give out enough 2's and 3's this year? Is it fair that you leave it up to the descretion of the VPs to determine bonus amounts based on whether they like you or not.

Please treat your employees with dignity and respect. Letting people go based on lame excuses, like "reorg" or terminating someone while on bereavement leave is not a great way to treat people.

I have been working at E*TRADE Financial full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Allowed to dress business casual for most times except when senior management team is onsite. Parking access is great for all.

    Cons

ETRADE people predominantly from India. Not very diverse. Few Americans. The work environment can be difficult to work at especially at the Menlo Park location.

    Advice to Management

Add more diversity to your workforce.
