    Pros

If you enjoy the culture, there are growth opportunities.

    Cons

Advancement is not merit based, but who you know: The company culture is like a small town highschool. Bad health insurance.

    Pros

Amazing group of people, exposure, pushes the limits, fast-paced, competitive, and similar to running your own business

    Cons

Poor work life balance, crazy expectations, and working with very rude people on an everyday basis (non-gallo employees)

    Advice to Management

Make yourself relatable to those entering these positions and find a way to genuinely motivate the employees; provide constant feedback and recognize improvements in an individual

I have been working at E. & J. Gallo Winery full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits and pay and people are great to work with.

    Cons

No automatic promotion. You have to apply for the position that is posted even for the same department and you have the qualifications. If anyone is good and padding his experiences and resumes you cannot complete. If you are not white or portuguese or a buddy you cannot get promoted.

    Advice to Management

Review the employee files and have an automatic review and promotion of people specially qualified.

    I worked at E. & J. Gallo Winery full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Rotational based company - Lots of opportunity to move around - One of the few companies where you can switch disciplines with relative ease (saw people go from engineering to finance, finance to supply chain, operations to engineering, etc.)
Family owned - No fear of massive layoffs, very willing to reinvest into company, and you get a good feeling of comradery with your fellow employees
Engagement - Company is very active in trying to get and keep employees engaged, can be a little over the top at times, but better than the alternative
Very low cost of living if you decide to live in the central valley
    Great benefits
Some of the best people I've ever worked with and will probably ever work with again. They are truly what makes this company special and I genuinely miss my coworkers on a daily basis. You can truly call your coworkers friends and family and genuinely feel a sense of comradery with them.
Extremely stable and most likely recession proof industry that still has a lot of room for growth
Constantly willing to question the status quo and open to change

    Cons

Compensation - No annual bonus until manager title, great salary for central valley, but poor compared to Sacramento or Bay Area
Promotion Opportunities - This is a mixed bag area, they have VERY stringent requirements on job titles and even if you're performing above your job title for several years they may not promote you driven entirely on "years of experience". The larger frustration with this point is that they seem to count "years of experience" in whatever way best suits their desires.
    Specific Example -
MBAs are often brought in with only internship experience at the "Senior Analyst" level, even though it requires 2+ years of experience + an MBA or 5+ years of experience and a bachelors. They will "count" part-time internship experience as full time to qualify those employees to be a senior analyst, however if you have 4.5 years of experience (with the company!) and a bachelors you will be told that you have to "Wait it out". To further that point the entire company is very biased towards what are called "rotational MBAs" which are seen as the golden employees compared to undergrads and direct hire employees. Those employees are treated the best, paid the most, given first shot at almost all "rotation jobs", and yet ironically seem to have the highest turnover ratio.
    It's in Modesto -

    Advice to Management

Treat all employees equally regardless of how they're recruited. Once you start at a company it should be about performance in your current job and you shouldn't get so caught up in checking boxes off of an HR form.

Keep up the good work you are doing well (family owned, engaged, etc.)

    Pros

Great Pay is all there really is

    Cons

If you work on the 12 hr panama shifts then it takes forever to get out of the probationary period. HR doesnt care if you have a family crisis during probationary period they will let you go regardless. As a new employee you will be on the night shift so good luck seeing family as youll be working 6 days a week.

    Advice to Management

Start focusing more on work life balance and come up with a new probationary period set of rules.

I worked at E. & J. Gallo Winery as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good company to work for with a great team friendly environment. A lot of different projects and many learning opportunities to try on different things.

    Cons

You will be stuck in one position for awhile. The possibility to move up int he company is very slim. A lot of people who may be even less qualified will be given the priority if they have been with the company longer than you.

    Advice to Management

Be honest with employees so they know their value in the company. A lot of talent comes and goes through Gallo without being able to fully use their full potential and skills for the company because they aren't given a chance or are not trusted enough to do so.
