I have been working at EBMUD full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people in pockets, good salary and benefits for existing employees. Staff believe in the mission. Compressed work week for some work units. Training and coaching available.

    Cons

Pension has been reduced for new employees.
Promotion is based on popularity and not quality. Soft skills - integrity, time management, communication, good supervisor, and communication skills are not valued. Technical skills are valued above all and the ability to smile and agree with management. Conflict avoidance is the norm. Non-engineers are not valued and administrative staff are treated as lower class. Not run as a business with norms and checks/balances. Run like mini-kingdoms. Status quo is highly valued at the leadership level. Do not rock the boat.

    Advice to Management

Stop focusing on the "Values" project and live it. Demonstrate with your actions what you really value. Otherwise it all lip service. Senior Management Team does not reflect what the words say and often circumvent leadership and team work for personal agendas.

I have been working at EBMUD full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great co-workers dedicated to quality product.

    Cons

Bureaucracy bureacracy bureacracy. Overall business requires streamlining.

    Advice to Management

Promote staff which come up through the trenches. Excessive engineers and managers are detriment to agency. Line staff require more relevant training and career development.

I have been working at EBMUD full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

benefits & pay are very good,

    Cons

Almost no training available if you are in a specialized field, unless you pay for it yourself and take your vacation days to go to it. Zero career growth, disrespectful and arrogant middle management - particularly in what some would call "women's work" departments. Other departments have more money and treat staff much better it appears.

    Advice to Management

Clean house of middle managers who are disrespectful. Develop and promote from within. Support your staff!

    Pros

    Cons

    Advice to Management

Recognize that boots on the ground may have a different perspective than yours but it will likely have merit

I have been working at EBMUD full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Salary is more than 90k for entry-level engineers. Probably highest in Bay Area for civil/environmental engineers. The employees generally seem pretty tight-knit, and there are weekly happy hours and lunch events.

Unlike most public agencies, EBMUD does not contract out all their engineering work. You will get hands on experience in design, modeling, or whatever relevant engineering experience in your department.

    Cons

As an entry level engineer, the variety of projects is not as diverse as what you’d get at a consulting company.

Compensation is not based on performance.

I have been working at EBMUD full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of good people. Organization is small enough that you can make a significant impact. Management is supportive of employees. Good training and employee development. Good benefits. Good work/life balance. Very stable.

    Cons

Change doesn't happen quickly at EBMUD, it takes time. Slow to adopt new technology. Work schedules could be more flexible.

The people are fun, the benefits are amazing, and the product is some of the best in the world.

When dealing with tyhe public and their water supply, sometimes you have to deal with emotionally charged and upsetting situations.

    Advice to Management

Set a maximum on sick pay. You are losing money and retaining low performing employees.
