    Pros

    - As you expect in a consulting firm, you get to work on different technology stacks on different projects. - It's a small company. Therefore, you can make a big impact. You get the chance to develop enterprise level softwares end to end. Given its size, you also have a lot of interactions with senior management, including the CEO and the founders of the company. - It has a good culture. Everyone in the company is...

I worked at ECHELON CONSULTING full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    - Fun, fast-paced, small, collaborative environment for entry-level developers to start their careers off and advance to senior-level architects/technologists - Software Engineers learn a significant amount in short of time, very hands-on exposure to latest technologies - Entire development team co-located in Chicago office for collaboration, knowledge sharing - No project overhead, everyone contributes, cross-functional...

    Cons

    - With any IT environment, occasional spikes in hours and stress - Limited process and procedures, lack of formal training program, learning is mentor/learn-as-you-go based... good or bad based on preferences - Engagement managers wear many, many hats; fill various roles typically dedicated for others, stretched thin at times - More Waterfall than Agile, fix-bid a large number of projects, putting pressure/stress on...

    Advice to Management

    - Grow customer base, aggressively market/advertise the company's niche in the market (on-shore, customer-focused, broad/strong technology expertise, small, easy to work with, reasonable rates, successful delivery) - Move to a more Agile delivery model to align with competition/market - Promote more co-location with clients, ability to work remotely

I worked at ECHELON CONSULTING full-time for more than a year

    Pros

-Lots of exposure to various software engineering methodologies and technologies -Friendly environment and culture -Good pay for someone right out of college -Freedom to make the job path you want

    Cons

-Not a ton of face to face client exposure -Maintenance of legacy applications for some long time clients

    Advice to Management

-Continue to put trust in your employees. When given responsibility, it allows them to grow -While face to face client exposure for young software engineers can be risky, I think it would better benefit the growth of their consulting careers. You can kind of just feel like a code monkey if you are only building an application with out building the relationships with your client partners -Stay away from maintenance of...

I worked at ECHELON CONSULTING full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Slightly above average pay Little red tape It's Easy to make a lot of progress at work every day Everything you do makes a huge impact on the company Company sponsored bar outings The quality of service provided here is top-notch A lot of pros of being a small company Everyone is nice most of the time The clients you work for are greatly impacted by your work and it's crucial to their business

    Cons

Imagine software work so terribly unattractive/bad that even if you could do it yourself you would pay someone else to do it. That's what you do here for a living. Hours can be long at times You have to fill out a timesheet even though you don't get paid by the hour When I write in less hours than I actually worked I get better reviews on my performance :( The company is so small everyone is afraid to write a...

    Advice to Management

You need some type of perk/benefit to make someone want to stay at the company. The projects are far less than rewarding upon completion and it's hard to feel like you're doing anything other than "doing the dirty work for an enterprise". It's also hard to hire the "Very good" talent you want when you only pay "slightly good"

I have been working at ECHELON CONSULTING full-time

    Pros

In my entire career I've never seen a company that cares as much about their employees as this company. It's a belief that the leadership demonstrates everyday. The environment allows for continuous exploration of fair and tangible initiatives that support personal and professional growth.

    Cons

The leadership has a good grasp of what needs to be done to accelerate the company. Conversations about how to continue to grow the business in all aspects is happening constantly.

Get to work in a wide variety of industries and stacks. Owner's have strong relationships with clients, so they bring in interesting projects that require the use of latest tech. Pros

Full stack experience Wide range of projects and technology stacks Great culture (young friendly, knowledgeable employees, weekly team lunches, monthly firm outings, big flats Friday happy hour ) Benefits and vacation time Gain consulting skills through client interaction Room for career advancement

    Cons

The male to female ratio of the company is a bit off. Hopefully this can be improved with new recruiting.

    Advice to Management

Do your best to keep the company's culture intact as it grows. The positive environment is one of my favorite reasons for working here.

I have been working at ECHELON CONSULTING

    Pros

I intentionally sought out a consulting position for the full-stack development experience and opportunity for client interaction, and Echelon totally delivers on those fronts. Each day is presents new, interesting problems to solve and new opportunities to grow and learn. Career path is aggressive pace-wise but flexible - you have a lot of control over how technical or client facing you want to be and the company...

    Cons

Client-based projects always run the risk of long hours to meet deadlines and changing requirements. I've experienced my fair share of late nights but there is positive momentum towards addressing this. Many legacy projects supported, most of which are undocumented and the primary developer is no longer with the firm. Application updates for these projects can be tough, but are infrequent and typically given to more...

    Advice to Management

Focus on hiring SSEs and filling out middle management. Make sure the opinions of all your employees are heard and give people many opportunities to voice them, both anonymously and directly. To owners: your passion for Echelon's success is clear as day. Let that keep driving growth and I think the company will continue to be successful.

I have been working at ECHELON CONSULTING full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Echelon is a great place for anyone looking for full-stack and full-lifecycle software development, and wants to gain experience in different technologies. Echelon is a project-based consultancy, and couples the benefits of a consulting job (working for different clients in different technologies) with the stability of an internal job (same co-workers, same office in the Loop every day) You will have the ability...

    Cons

Being a smaller firm, there aren't a lot of formalized policies, which can cause confusion at times (on the flip side, there isn't much red tape either). Projects can be stressful and the hours can get long if a project is over budget or not meeting its timeline. If you require a lot of assistance in picking up technologies, or don't want to continue evolving, you will not succeed here.

    Advice to Management

Work to formalize some of the key policies, and continue the growth trajectory while keeping the "developer-centric" firm culture.
