I worked at EF Education First full-time

    Pros

Great work environment and made the transistion to China very easy. Any problems from finding apartments, visas, to losing my cell phone were always taken care of by a native who was willing to take persona time to help.

    Cons

Long hours, vacations days were often blocked off during affordable travel dates.

    Advice to Management

Spread responsibility out between teachers. It’s not fair just because you’re the best teacher you have to work more classes than someone else.

"EF is a positive, fast paced environment where employees are pushed hard and turn-over fast."

I have been working at EF Education First for more than a year

    Pros

Fun work environment, good professional development, international travel opportunities, cool product, beautiful office, nice location, great benefits and health insurance, passionate and attractive co-workers

    Cons

You’re thrown into the fire, required to wear multiple hats at once, asked to work over-time and are substantially underpaid. EF has a complicated, unclear and at times misleading compensation structure and very high turnover, especially among entry level employees. The company is completely private about profit margins to its employees. The company also has few employees of color.

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees what they’re worth and people will stick around longer than a year, be transparent, focus on hiring people of color

I have been working at EF Education First full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

EF offers a fun work environment for recent graduates not ready for the jump into adulthood. There is a very relaxed environment, a beautiful office, and a bar on site. The people hired for EF are generally of the same feather - outgoing, fun, and nice. I have met some life-long friends at EF. Unlimited sick days and many vacation days mean that you get a good amount of time off (if you can get it approved by your manager - coverage is prioritized). Most products within EF offer the opportunity to travel with the company at least once a year.

    Cons

EF has incredible turn-over due to the lack of compensation. It doesn't take long to get run down by the daily struggle of being on the cusp of debt with no clear path within the company. Those who work hardest are often promoted when spots open up, which means management is typically ill equipped and seldom trained to actually lead a team or delegate tasks because they simply are hard workers, not leaders. It is difficult to find your place here unless you find someone that takes an interest in you (and they don't quit). There are a lot of smoke and mirror games to keep new hires excited rather than actually developing or investing in those who have proved their own interest and loyalty with EF. High expectations for performance, stamina, and morale despite the lack of financial investment, career opportunities, or actual employee development.

    Advice to Management

Invest in those who have invested in you, financially and/or with development opportunities. Compensate appropriately for the expensive city (Boston) that you are based in. Focus more on hiring experienced, capable management staff.

I have been working at EF Education First

    Pros

In China, the work environment will be either good or bad depending on your team. Also, its a large company, so you have peace of mind that they will pay you.

    Cons

The company culture is pretty ridiculous. They promote people who drink the cool-aid, so you end up with people in management positions who probably shouldn't be managing anything at all.

    Advice to Management

Nothing really matters, keep doing what you are doing and eventually everyone in China will have taken an EF lesson.
