    Positive Outlook

I have been working at EH Publishing full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A congenial environment that values experience and teamwork. Engaged with cutting-edge technologies and markets.

    Cons

Not everyone understands an online-first publishing model, and the sales and editorial teams and business divisions could work more closely together.

    Advice to Management

Work more with rank-and-file employees to make the best use of non-sales practices and technologies.

I worked at EH Publishing full-time

    Pros

Knowledgable staff to learn from and work with.

    Cons

Super old-school, in terms of culture, hours, flexibility, leadership, etc.
Pretty toxic environment. Employees should be treated much better (ie. more compensation, opportunity for growth, appreciation, motivation, inspiration, etc).

    Advice to Management

Start putting your employees and customers first.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at EH Publishing full-time

    Pros

Most employees at EH are hard-working and nice people.

    Cons

Management is terribly disorganized and often deceptive and overall strategy feels non-existent. The company appears to be struggling and segments are being sold off. Environment is high stress, low work-life balance, with little recognition / reward for efforts. There was a time I felt like management cared about each employee, but as time progressed, I started feeling more like a mere number.

    Advice to Management

Transparency is key. It is natural for companies to struggle at times and morale to dip. Management being transparent with their employees is vital to keeping stress levels lower and conspiracy theories at bay. Also, management needs to understand that they have many dedicated, loyal employees who are burning themselves out trying to keep their divisions afloat, and sacrificing personal and family time to do it. A little recognition goes a long way to keeping people energized.

I worked at EH Publishing full-time

    Pros

Flexible PTO (20 days, sick time combined)

    Cons

    Low pay
    Disorganized
    Policy consistency
No bonuses and raises range between 2-4%
High turnover, at least one person leaves every month
    No culture

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees what their worth and stop throwing projects at them if you can't compensate them fairly. A 2-4% raise is terrible.

I worked at EH Publishing full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great, hard working staff and the company is respectful of family/work life balance. Almost everyone is freindly, and supportive of each other with minimal treacherous behaviour. Despite overall lack of corporate vision, the staff keeps pushing to move the ball forward within their domains.

    Cons

Legacy thinking (from the top) and not staying current on publishing industry trends in addition to transactional, short term approaches to development and resources makes building for impact challenging and positions the brands to be clobbered by competitors.
In some cases, this also results in managers trying to reach unobtainable line item revenue goals.
Divisions work unnecessarily in silos reducing the ability to fully leverage the unique skills and creativity of the greater collective and there is no professional development initiatives or support.

    Advice to Management

Invest in resouces to help management and staff develop professionally and stay current on industry trends. Provide better structure and support for division managers so they can succeed and grow their products rather than watch them struggle to simply sustain - a result of legacy approaches to operations and markets. Stop investing in flash in the pan fast money schemes. Listen to the market and staff.

I have been working at EH Publishing full-time

    Pros

    People are great, no jerks
    You can really develop relationships
    Generous PTO and benefits
Lots of opportunity to self-manage and be creative

    Cons

Upper management is stuck in a 90s work era mentality
Not a lot going on in terms of culture

    Advice to Management

Investing a little more at the bottom goes a long way at the top. Penny pinching is terrible for growth.

I have been working at EH Publishing full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great group of people who genuinely try to help each other and advance the company. Casual work environment, very family-friendly. A publishing business that is focused on a number of niches that are growing - a nice combination to see. It's always more fun to work in a business that is growing.

    Cons

It's an old-style business which has its pros and cons. Executives are working hard to embrace a digital world but the day-to-day pace is slow relative to younger companies. There is some reluctance to try new things and the culture does not quickly embrace change.

    Advice to Management

Balancing the pros of a welcoming, family-friendly environment while also kicking it up a notch to compete in the 21st Century is a challenge but also possible. Great direction with new digital strategies.

    Pros

Casual dress everyday, good policies when it comes to bad weather, good group of people

    Cons

Does not support continued training to keep one up to date in their areas

    Advice to Management

Include a wellness perk in the health plan
