I worked at EMBL full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very collaborative and open science, access to resources is great.
Stellar speakers come in for seminars or conferences all the time, and all staff members have access to those.
People are very friendly and approachable, very international environment. Very good compensation at all levels.

    Cons

Some positions can be influenced with egos and politics.
    Generally high pressure environment.

    Advice to Management

Leadership skills workshops are not useful if they are not applied in practice within individual labs. More work needs to be done in that area to protect early-stage scientists.

I worked at EMBL full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great facilities, lots of money for research, international and stimulating environment, many opportunities to network.

    Cons

It can be a miserable experience if you end up in the wrong group. Some group leaders have no skills whatsoever as team managers and sometimes they do not even have precise ideas on their research. Before accepting an offer, talk to all the members of the group and listen to what they have to say about the group leader. Ask around, also to members of other labs in the same unit, and if possible contact former PhD students of the group: they will probably give you the most honest advice.

    Advice to Management

Recruit group leaders more carefully, paying attention not only to their scientific achievements but also to their skills as team managers.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at EMBL full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Resounding name (at least in Europe).
Nicely paid (at least as a PhD).
Nice training opportunities (core course in Heidelberg, informatics in Hinxton, soft-skill courses).
Thesis committee overlooking your PhD, and step in if you got troubles with your supervisor.

    Cons

Group leaders are young, being boss for the first time, so they can be quite bad in management.
Grenoble outstation feels a bit isolated. Opportunities are not as much as in Heidelberg.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at EMBL full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Broad range of research topics. Expertise for many fields available. Well connected to other research institutes/universities. Predoc course at the beginning give opportunity to meet all PhD students from your year from all outstations, which gives a great academic network.

    Cons

They aim big, so many students leave without a single publication.

    Advice to Management

Focus on improving publication record of students

    Pros

    sehr gute Ausstattung
    sehr gute Zusammenarbeit zwischen Laboren
    viele hochklassige Konferenzen vor Ort
    sehr guter Ruf
    sehr gutes PhD Programm
    Kinderhaus (Betreuung ab 3 Monate)
    exzellente Kantine

    Cons
