    - Heidelberg area is beautiful (I was based at the EMBL Headquarters in Heidelberg);

    Pros

Great work atmosphere, lots of support for family, social activities heavily encouraged.

    Cons

Depends what department you work for. Limited PD unless you know people. Max 9 years for staff contracts. Amazing for science, not so much for other departments.

    Advice to Management

focus on knowledge retention in core business units and professional development.

    Pros

Great scientific environment. International. Fellowships are higher when compared to other institutes. Group leaders from varied background, If you want to collaborate its easy.

    Cons

Its going to be tough if you end up with a difficult group leader and you need a lot of self-motivation to stay strong

    Advice to Management

If you are in the out-station you are limited with the interactions . There is much more happening at the EMBL, Heidelberg.

I worked at EMBL full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very collaborative and open science, access to resources is great.
Stellar speakers come in for seminars or conferences all the time, and all staff members have access to those.
People are very friendly and approachable, very international environment. Very good compensation at all levels.

    Cons

Some positions can be influenced with egos and politics.
    Generally high pressure environment.

    Advice to Management

Leadership skills workshops are not useful if they are not applied in practice within individual labs. More work needs to be done in that area to protect early-stage scientists.
