I have been working at EMC full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Allow you to work from home or the office. You can choose to become a fully remote worker or balance your time as you see fit.

    - Support new hires, and give you as much time as you need to set up your benefits, handle HR/IT needs, and go through the required orientation/training steps.

    - Create documents covering a wide spectrum of technical topics, from complex topics pertaining to software/hardware engineering to guides intended for day to day use by the supply chain and manufacturing.
    - Focused on fostering a team atmosphere through work related and extracurricular activities.

    Cons

    - Worked for the company in a lower position, which led to an opportunity to mentor with the Senior Technical Writer supporting my group. Although I was lucky enough to find someone experienced with mentoring young writers, it was an upward battle for support to grow in a direction indirectly related to my day to day job.

    Advice to Management

In my current position, management does an amazing job relating to the group and protecting the people under them when dealing with upper management. Directors and VPs actually maintain a relatively close and accessible relationship with the writers in the group.

In Supply Chain and Manufacturing, the managers need to involve themselves in the day to day life of the people under them to better understand the needs of their employees. Supervisors act as the middle man between the workers on the floor and management, which creates a disconnect for employees, resulting in a poor working environment. The negative atmosphere coupled with the requirement for most employees to go above and beyond the description and compensation for their role, makes for a job with low satisfaction and high turnover.

Working as an hourly employee in Manufacturing and a salaried professional supporting Engineering, I’ve witnessed and experienced a clear demarcation in how each group is treated. Management would benefit from taking the approach used in the offices and applying as much as possible to every level of employment in the company.
