I worked at EMC full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Went through a phase where it stepped out of its legacy process and incubated or acquired some data storage software for modern environments. Lot of success during that phase as well as some innovation. Was able to attract and retain some top notch engineers during this phase. If you are good, you got to work on some interesting distributed systems problems. Unfortunately this phase ended with Dell merger.

    Cons

After Dell, the team I was on, was essentially wrecked. Hiring freeze and no attempt to retain best talent meant all good engineers left. Tried to make up by aggressive hiring in cheaper countries but those teams couldn't cope and project quality took a deep dive. No development of new features - all the time spend on trouble shooting. Obsessed with sales but lost customer goodwill due to declining product quality.

    Advice to Management

Good software engineering teams are hard to build and easy to loose in this job market. Try not to loose any good team you still have.

I worked at EMC full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people across the sales organization are very helpful. I have worked with many sales engineers and sales people and they are all bright exceptional people.

    Cons

Depending on the department you get into they do not often have defined job roles and try to require you to work nights and weekends as they manage things ineffectively.

    Advice to Management

Try to manage activities better and do not overwork the employees. There should be a level of accountability on everyone to accomplish their job which should be upheld and not pawned off on other groups.

    Pros

    Great learning opportunities

    Cons

    Slow path to promotions
    Low wages
Hard to utilize newly found skills after investing time in training

    Advice to Management

Help team members put their new skills to work with new projects or help them transition within the company otherwise they usually transition to competitors. Its better to retain talent
