    Pros

Certain jobs at this company are great... but if you end up with a bad one... IT'S BAD. I have heard that HR, marketing, etc are wonderful places to work. But do your research, meet people on the team, ask about work life balance. Be as transparent as possible. They pay well, especially for entry-level jobs. Great benefits. A ton of opportunity for growth.

    Cons

60 hour weeks were the norm. They make you earn every single penny. At my first job, which was designed for entry level people who were willing to work for slave labor, 8 am - midnight was scheduled for each of us at least 3 days a week during the last 6 weeks of the quarter. All while being paid salary and no overtime. Breaks were discouraged, you ate at your desk. Young, dumb kids won't say anything because they just feel lucky to have a job that doesn't pay 30K a year. But when you factor in the 16 hour days the salary is worthless.

Managers who didn't even go to college but "knew someone". HR is nowhere to be found and just turns their head at all of the inappropriate activity. They pay well- but getting a raise is a battle- especially if you work in the Channel. Whatever you do- do not work in the Channel!

    Advice to Management

Stop treating people like disposable factory workers and start appreciating the amazing talent you have, otherwise they will leave like I did! Don't promote inefficient people just because they've been there so long and you don't know what to do with them.

I worked at EMC full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits are very well, products are fun to work on.

    Cons

Long hours are expected, it seems they burn you out and then let you go. They are into hiring overseas and letting people go in the United States, I guess other companies are doing the same thing.

If you are let go and collect severance pay you are required to let them know right way and they will decide if they will continue paying you, there will be a messages sent to you from HR requiring you to reply to their email, if you don’t reply your pay will be cut off. If you find a job and don’t let them know they have it written up in the legal papers you could be accountable to pay the legal fees for EMC along with paying the money back to EMC. I’ve talked to a lot of other people in different companies and they get to keep the severance pay even when then find a new job.

Once a year we were pushed to take the employee survey, they say it’s anonymous but an ID is assigned to your name, if negative feedback is given about management you’re the first on the cut list. So when you see EMC is rated one of the best places to work just keep this in mind.

    Advice to Management

Middle management cares about their people, Upper Management decision to force everyone to learn Peal and now Python needs to rethink what they are doing. Upper management was forcing individuals to learn perl and they would rate them, i.e L0 L1 L2, rumors had it L0 were the 1st on the cut list. My advise to Sr. Management is not everyone are programmers.

Changing a job description in the middle of a career to match what upper management wants doesn’t seem very fair or ethical, please rethink this also.

    Pros

Good people, good work life balance

    Cons

Driven by sales, not very innovative, no clear strategy

    Advice to Management

Disconnect between executive management and individual business units, each group acts as it's own company often competing with one another with no shared objective.

I worked at EMC full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Many tremendous associates at the individual-contributor level. Solid benefits. Opportunities across multiple lines of business

    Cons

Salary lags the industry by a lot. Bias against remote and field-office workers. Bloated mid-level management. Continually poor BU-level senior management. Strategic plan often sacrificed to make the quarterly numbers. Bloodbath as people now fight to stay on to the close of the Dell deal and have their options vest.

    Advice to Management

Too much talk about movement to a solutions orientation. The culture is too geared toward selling storage boxes only. Stop trying to build new storage hardware and create true cross-Federation solutions that are comp-neutral across VMware, Pivotal, RSA, and EMC.
