I have been working at EMC full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Competitive compensation and benefits. Great co-workers and management team. Flexible schedules. Challenging assignments.

    Cons

Poor training and development opportunities. Difficult to change jobs laterally or move to new areas. Promotions are infrequent. Cronyism among certain teams. Poor work life balance = hard to unplug during personal time and vacations. Geographically dispersed teams means some late night or early morning conference calls.

    Advice to Management

Encourage and support (fund) career development, training, and certifications for all team members not just the top players. Don't burn out employees with death marches that last more than a week at a time. Respect employees personal and family time.

I worked at EMC full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits and competitive compensation package, flexible working hour and life balance.

    Cons

Too many management levels of this company's org structure, and the global operation style creates more difficulties in company internal collaboration between the engineers in East coast, Silicon Valley, and Asia. And too many meetings. Good for management, but not for engineers.

I worked at EMC full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Overall a good, solid company with good benefits, competitive salaries and good work-life balance. Work life balance is much better than at some of the very aggressive companies.

    Cons

East Coast HQ is not always up to speed on Silicon Valley best practices.

    Advice to Management

Update best practices from time to time and DO NOT keep doing the same thing for more than ten years - at that point you are out of date.

I have been working at EMC full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    * Advancement opportunities for people who really deliver within the organization.
    * Open to employees working from home especially when always online, reachable and clearly working.
    * Stable, experienced leadership teams.
    * Leaders are demanding and have strong sense of urgency. Type A players who are like that too do well at EMC typically.

    Cons

    * There's turmoil with the Dell merger looming and employees / managers are anxious about the future.
    * Cuts are likely, especially in corporate functions
    * The company is going to get even bigger. Will bureaucracy get worse?

    Advice to Management

    * Provide clarity on which teams / functions will be impacted by cost-cutting measures as soon as possible to we can all stop stressing about it.
    * Continue the great, open communication about the high level plans for the Dell merger and the strategic objectives of it all.
