I have been working at EMC full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very friendly and cooperative colleagues. Lots opportunities to learn new things for technical track. People are willing to help. There is a good work/life balance.

    Cons

No career advancement opportunity for management track. Lots of politics at senior management level. It's not about who does a good job. But then that is the same in all big companies.

    Advice to Management

Stop playing politics and do what is the right thing for the company.

    Pros

    - smart, intelligent and dedicated colleagues
    - lot of events, parties, outings, pot lunch through both university relations and internal team etc.
    - My manager was very nice. Unlike some managers who just want to get the work done, she invested time and resources for me to learn things.

    Cons

Due to the merger, there are a lot of cost cuttings and I saw a lot of people being fired or leaving in a very short time.My own team was almost half when I left.

    Advice to Management

    Try retaining good employees.

I worked at EMC full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

EMC pre-Dell: Great People and culture. Management had a strategic plan and execution of that plan appeared on target. I cannot comment post acquisition.

    Cons

Numerous acquisitions created a diverse product portfolio. In most cases, these acquisitions were allowed to operate quasi-independently utilizing a core engineering organization to perform product development. This core engineering organization had to fulfill that development with flat to continually decreasing staff and budget.

    Advice to Management

Get past the downsizing and execute strategy quickly. Focus new products to meet customer requirements and budget - hone your marketing skills.

I have been working at EMC full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Competitive compensation and benefits. Great co-workers and management team. Flexible schedules. Challenging assignments.

    Cons

Poor training and development opportunities. Difficult to change jobs laterally or move to new areas. Promotions are infrequent. Cronyism among certain teams. Poor work life balance = hard to unplug during personal time and vacations. Geographically dispersed teams means some late night or early morning conference calls.

    Advice to Management

Encourage and support (fund) career development, training, and certifications for all team members not just the top players. Don't burn out employees with death marches that last more than a week at a time. Respect employees personal and family time.

I have been working at EMC (More than a year)

    Pros

I love working at EMC. Great managers, great coworkers. A lot of people with long tenures here, which I find very attractive when looking for places to work. EMC is a company that cares about its employees.
EMC also makes it easy to switch to different roles within the company if you want, which is actually really great. I know a ton of people that have done that. It is a good way to keep the talent from leaving to try something new.

    Cons

yearly layoffs have people uneasy at times

    Advice to Management

don't allow the dell merger to impact our culture or the benefits too much
