I have been working at EMD Millipore full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Decent benefit, beautiful offices, many friendly and intelligent colleagues. Slightly flexible work hours. Lots of training classes offered, plenty of cross-functional cooperation opportunities if you are in the right department.

    Cons

It was a very good company several years ago. but work life can be the hell if you don't have a good manager. Imagine a technical-focus department has no manager with advanced degree, can't make right decisions in time, can't sport the real problem, can't work with science mind, and can't hire right people. Development is only for certain people since budget is tight.

    Advice to Management

Evaluate people with their expertise, not how confident they show. Strategy and all kinds of innovation idea is good, but management should hear the bottom layer employee's voice. Stop cutting corners if you still want to be a great company.

    Pros

pay and vacation time, a half decent cafeteria

    Cons

Unprofessional and uneducated management, rampant nepotism, favoritism. If you are not part of the in crowd here you will go nowhere. If management doesn't like you, they will either set you up to fail so they can fire you, or they will harass you until you quit on your own.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

Great company. HR trying to promote flex work week, 9/80, work from home, work/life balance to attract and retain talent.

    Cons

Some departments are still operating in the 1960's and won't buy into the hiring trends of the 21st century!

    Advice to Management

Bring your functional management into the 21st century and you might actually retain new hires!

I worked at EMD Millipore full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

A job is a job right up until you make it a career, which is just a job that you take seriously. Millipore was my first legitimate corporate position, and through enthusiasm, diligent work, a friendly demeanor and a desire to learn, Millipore provided experience in spades. The money was nice, too.

Millipore's Lean Six Sigma group is top notch. If you have the ability to work with them, take advantage of their experience and knowledge.

Also, EMD Millipore pays its CS department very well in comparison to other corporations. Their college reimbursement is also fantastic.

Advice to current and future employees: Some of the best, most experienced and well paid people at EMD Millipore moved from department to department, or even left and came back. Don't stay in one place too long. Sometimes you need to take a step back to move two steps forward.

    Cons

CS occurrence policy (sick time, etc) was the worst policy ever created. It needs to be revised or dumped altogether. The need for it is understandable, but the reasons for it can be dealt with on an individual level. It is complete garbage to prevent parents from taking time off to care for their kids just because of their prior sick time use, or to force them to take off without pay.

    Advice to Management

Push employees toward schooling, even if it is not degree worthy. Certificates, classes, etc. Make sure employees understand what is needed to move forward, if that is what they want. For the disgruntled employees, find positions in other departments that they can swap into. Otherwise, one of the most common themes I've experienced while employed at Millipore and before that is this: if you treat your employees like animals, they'll act like animals. If you treat them like adults, they will behave that way. Also, don't punish the entire team for the actions of one individual.

I have been working at EMD Millipore full-time

    Pros

Great team mates, good products, autonomy

    Cons

Have been short handed for years. Expect to run and run hard. Always an emergency. Extra layer of management recently added and stress levels have dramatically increased. Bonuses dwindling to a fraction of what they were. Traveling WAY more than was told I would.

    Advice to Management

If you don't want to use third party anymore then hire people. Your people are tired.

I worked at EMD Millipore full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Dynamic company seeking a young, educated workforce. Pay and benefits are good.

    Cons

This organization is bottom line oriented. If your position does not directly effect the bottom line, you are out of a job. Lots of outsourcing going on. Since they are always buying new companies there are duplication of positions and then large layoffs.

    Advice to Management

Do you know what "calibration" is? Watch out it could happen to you!
