I have been working at ESI Group part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I am a shareholder and director so take this with the appropriate filters: ambitious team and vision; great respect for cultures across the globe; good momentum and client intimacy

    Cons

I am a shareholder and director so take this with the appropriate filters: comp, lex engineering topics across many domains (physics) , methods (1D to VR) and industries (nuclear to packaging) make it a steep learning curve.

    Advice to Management

I talk to them directly so would rather continue this direct dialogue than post anonymously here

I worked at ESI Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You will learn a lot by working at ESI.
Virtual prototyping is their slogan and that is what they do. Virtual manufacturing to virtual performance. You will get to know the tools and the process for virtual designing and evaluating a design.

    Cons

ESI is a global company by name. In reality each subsidiary is treated as an independent unit. There is not much communication happening between the units. The units actually compete against one another. For example, their centers of excellence keep the technology to themselves so the subsidiaries go back to them to do work.

    Advice to Management

    Improve communication withing the company.
    Treat all divisions the same.
Hold people responsible; don't wash problems under the rug.

    Pros

I worked as an intern there and working environment was friendly. People are nice and I encounter some problems and people from other teams can spend time help you.

    Cons

    Need more challenging work.

    Pros

Research oriented and very laid back atmosphere. Immigrant and H1B friendly, almost every second guy in the company is Indian or Chinese.

    Cons

This company is not really a good place for software engineers. Most of their software systems are legacy CFD support software that does not offer any challenges from a computer science point of view. Most of the software engineers at ESI work on user interface design, which of course is boring and terrible for someone looking to further his career as a computer scientist. The big issue is, when you are hired as a software engineer, it appears you are hired to work on engineering software but in reality you end up designing user interfaces using outdated and outmoded UI toolkits.

    Advice to Management

Too much CFDRC legacy is still lingering in the Huntsville office. There are serious communication problems between different teams and quite honestly they hate the guts of each other. It wouldn't hurt to move people between different worldwide offices (temporarily or permanently) to temper down these differences and make them feel like they belong to the bigger ESI family.

    Pros

Co-workers are a great source of problem solving for clients' needs. Great exposure to numerous types of organizational cultures and industries.

    Cons

Senior management decisions often communicated after the fact thus putting employees in the position of non-compliance without being aware.

    Advice to Management

Seek honest feedback from employees rather than only rewarding the compliments made by employees about how well management is doing.

    Pros

Good initial company to start for after college

    Cons

Management has no long term vision
Technical guys are treated as slaves
Employee to work balance is really high
    Safe heaven for slackers
    No investment for employee education
The managers think they are the best at what they do and don't need any advice
Full of egoistic managers and team members

    Advice to Management

Please slow down and take a look at the technical team. Sales guys will get you sales but technical guys get the job done. Please treat them good.

    - Lack of motivation, no team feeling
    - Almost all communication is remote due to multiple office locations and home office
    - Middle to low salary, very poor benefits
    - Waterfall and very bureaucratic project management
    - Poor software quality, over designed and low performance
    - Complete detachment of actual use cases of the software and customers

    Advice to Management

More agile development model, more rewarding to talented people
