    Pros

Important: It completely depends from the institute!
    Very flexible process of employment
    Great way of communication.
My job was focussing on a special task and I had a lot of freedom to fulfill it.

    Cons

In my case, I was employed to fulfill a special job. The initial contract was about two month. I needed three month to complete the job and was payed for the third month as well. After completion, the contract was not extended.
I was payed for a certain amount of hours, which was exceeded by far.

    Advice to Management

Try to distinguish between tasks and hours. Try to generate more student assistant positions, which include students in the research for longer time.

I have been working at ETH Zurich as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very good facilities (sports, food, library etc.). Very good supervision. Academic freedom and creativity.

    Cons

Publication stress can be high. This depends strongly on your group / professor. Some professors require you too publish at least 5 first-author papers before being able to defend your thesis.

    Advice to Management

Stimulate an environment in which quality is more important than quantity of work. The academic environment is too much focussed on quantity. There is no time to make brilliant ideas flourish.

Current Contractor - Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter/Doktorand in Zürich (Switzerland)
Current Contractor - Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter/Doktorand in Zürich (Switzerland)

I have been working at ETH Zurich as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

PhD students get 5 weeks of vacation (1 more than University of Zurich).
Professional organisations are fairly active and do help to solve conflicts.
Sport facilities are amazing, for any level, open to all employees.

    Cons

Workload is extremely high and environment is highly competitive, up to ugly, sometimes.
Professors don't quite care about other employement options after PhD other than PostDocs, and therefore push to publications even when it's not suitable for this exact PhD student to have more publications as opposed to getting more skills that can be transfered out of academia.

    Advice to Management

Make Professors more open to letting PhD students train themselves for jobs outside the academia. Train Professor to truly manage their teams, not only press and push, but also process conflicts and other "human" problems
