I have been working at EY for more than 3 years

    Pros

Loved the teams I worked on. Generally good people. Able to move up and manage teams at an early stage in your career is a plus.

    Cons

The only people that stick around at this company are the ones that are willing to schmooze the partners and senior managers. People towards the top or the ones that want to eventually be partners are willing to throw you under the bus to get ahead. The hours worked can be intense, having worked 100+ hours a week with little reward. The bonuses given are a joke compared to the time you spend year-round working on... jobs. You may get through a tough busy season and they will throw a $100-$200 gift card at you for your efforts.

    Advice to Management

Stop focusing on the employees who do good work, but are terrible at management. They are toxic to the people below. I have heard countless stories and excuses such as, "we know they are terrible to work for, but they get the job done".

    Pros

You'll be able to learn in a fast paced environment with other like minded people. All employees are motivated and hard working which makes the workplace truly a positive environment. Because you have the opportunity to work on multiple industries and multiple clients your experience is much more valuable than if you just work at one company for the same amount of time. This is a fantastic place to grow your career.... There have also been a ot of initiatives to make work life balance more readily available. Flexible work arrangements and 16 weeks of paid parental leave are extremely attractive.

    Cons

Trade off for all of the learning is that you'll be devoting a lot of your time to working, and none of it will be reflected in compensated time or overtime pay. However, that time is used to get the job done. If you're more task oriented this will be helpful.

I worked at EY full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

You are given a lot of learning opportunities at EY. You will be given a lot of responsibility early on in your career compared to a lot of other accounting jobs. I enjoyed working with hard-working, smart individuals in a team driven environment that really helped me learn and develop as a professional. Getting Big 4 experience on your resume early in your career is great and will open up so many opportunities. EY... also gives employees a good amount of vacation to start and it was encouraged to use it.

    Cons

If you want to be a high performer at EY, Work/Life balance is very hard to achieve. The hours are long, even outside of busy season. During busy season, you'll be working 60+ hours a week. Even in the "slow" time of the year, I was generally working more than 40 hours a week - typically closer to 50. A lot of partners/managers place unrealistic deadlines on projects that don't necessarily require aggressive... deadlines. Each year, my teams got smaller and smaller just so the "margin" would look better, which resulted in more hours and more burnout. The yearly training sessions are great, but even then you are expected to go back to your hotel to get caught up with all the work you missed while at training.

    Advice to Management

In order to keep employees from experiencing burnout, management needs to stop hyper-focusing on margin. This mindset leads to smaller teams with the same amount of work to complete, which just leads to longer hours, more stress, and unhappy employees. A lot of issues with EY would be fixed simply by having the appropriate amount of staffing on each team.
