I worked at East Bay Regional Park District full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Working with the Public, Outdoors, with a Great Mission of Preservation & Ecological Education

    Cons

Sexist Managers, Sexual Harassment by Supervisors, with female employees who report harassment, unfairly punished, moved to other parks or having their duties given to male counterparts. Harder for female employees in certain departments to advance on a career path, and no career path after you report sexual harassment, you are basically persona non grata and transferred to a remote location.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your female rangers and employees, believe and side with them. Don't allow supervisors to continue to work at EBRPD after it is confirmed that they have harassed or otherwise treated female employees unfairly. This is wrong, we know better - support working women.

I worked at East Bay Regional Park District full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great pay and benefits compared to comparable work in the bay area. Mostly smart and fun coworkers. Pretty low-drama management and organization overall.

    Cons

Hard initially to get a full time job- may have to temp in various positions to get in the system.

    Advice to Management

I understand why it works for the agency to have so many people shuffling between temp positions before getting hired permanent/full time, but I think it's worth trying to fix. It IS discriminatory against those who don't have backgrounds that give them the freedom to be underutilised/underpaid/unbenefitted for a year or more. This works okay for some but may be prohibitive depending on your background- so it doesn't necessarily get the best workers, as much as those who can afford to go without full-time, benefited work for a while.

    Pros

You get to work with people who really love their jobs and know what they are doing. A very friendly environment.

    Cons

Working for a special district comes with a lot of responsibilities and making sure you're accountable to the public. So if you aren't ready for that, not a good place for you

    Advice to Management

It would be nice to know what is going on in upper management more often. There is a lack of communication at times and different departments suffer because of it

I have been working at East Bay Regional Park District full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

This is a Union shop. There is job security.

    Cons

This is a Union shop and "special district" government agency. Salaries, benefits and cost of living are negotiated by the Union with management. Employees have taken a big hit since 2007 and the salaries have not kept pace with private companies.

    Advice to Management

Be kind. Do the right thing.

    Pros

You get to work on a lake all day.

    Cons

The staff is terrible to work with and the upper management has their heads were not screwed on tight. I dont know what else to say it was dumb.

    Advice to Management

Please stop being military when all were doing is working as lifeguards. No need to be jerks.

I have been working at East Bay Regional Park District full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible Hours. Beautiful parks and natural resources.

    Cons

Below market pay. Poor worker morale. Eroding benefits. No end in sight. Run don't walk away unless you are desperate.

    Advice to Management

Attract better talent. Lose the 1960s way of administration. New website and hip social awareness only gets you so far. The bones are weak.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at East Bay Regional Park District part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great pay, great people, paid education.

    Cons

Would schedule for hours and then call off later. Irritating. Union dues are also the same no matter hours worked. So if you work 4 hours in a period for any reason you'll lose over half your paycheck to the union.

    Advice to Management

    None
